Solar-driven water splitting provides a leading approach to store the abundant yet intermittent solar energy and produce hydrogen as clean sustainable carrier. A straightforward route light-driven is apply self-supported particulate photocatalysts, which expected allow be competitive with fossil-fuel-derived on levelized cost basis. More importantly, powder-based systems can lend themselves making functional panels large scale while retaining intrinsic activity of photocatalyst. However, all attempts generate via water-splitting date have unfortunately fallen short efficiency values required for practical applications. Photocatalysis photocatalyst particles involves three sequential steps: (i) absorption photons higher energies than bandgap excitation electron-hole pairs in particles, (ii) charge separation migration these photoexcited carriers, (iii) surface chemical reactions based carriers. Two-dimensional (2D) materials present many unique concepts, including material properties that sometimes differ dramatically from those of their bulk counterparts. One these properties, piezoelectricity, is important for micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems applications. Using symmetry analysis, we determine the independent piezoelectric coefficients four groups predicted synthesized 2D materials. The photocatalytic water splitting technique is a promising alternative to produce hydrogen using facile and proficient method. In the current Review, recent progress made in evolution reaction (HER) 2D nanomaterials (NMs) composite heterostructures described. strong in-plane chemical bonds along with weak van der Waals interaction make these materials lucrative for surface-related applications. State-of-the-art protocols designed synthesis of NMs discussed detail. Review illustrates density functional theory (DFT)-based studies against new set NMs, which also highlights importance structural defects doping electronic structure. Additionally, describes influence electronic, structural, surface manipulation strategies. These impact structures, intrinsic conductivity, finally output toward HER.
