Abstract This study provides formulae for monthly estimates of the Soya Warm Current (SYC) transport from sea-level difference (SLD) across Strait and along current, creates a 50-yr data set SYC transport. The are based on dynamical balance both strait current by considering barotropic baroclinic components. It is suggested that components in variability comparable summer, whereas component dominant winter. We compared 50-year time series with those Tsushima (TSC) Tsugaru Currents estimated SLDs viewpoint Japan Sea Throughflow (JSTF) system. variabilities TSC transports mostly shared any season, showing relatively high coherence at periods 2–5 years as well 1 year. winter JSTF originates partly caused monsoon Okhotsk. significantly correlated through eastern channel TSC, but not western channel. found difficulty extracting relationships longer than 5 among three SLDs, probably due to incomplete correction ground movements data.

Abstract The Sanriku Confluence east of Japan is the region confluence Tsugaru Warm Current from Sea Japan, Oyashio western subarctic gyre and Okhotsk, Kuroshio water that has detached subtropical gyre. It a field vigorous stirring driven by variability in current systems, but transition processes between masses have yet to be clarified. High‐resolution underwater conductivity‐temperature‐depth observations were undertaken during each four seasons test hypothesis water‐mass gradient set without full stirring. Analyses isopycnal coordinates indicate seasonal occurrence prominent fronts both salinity displacement, related emergence various masses. After fitting error functions frontal features, seasonally emerging often became extremely sharp with widths typically narrower than 3 km, supporting hypothesis. Disturbances distinguished structures variance peaks ranges similar or slightly greater baroclinic Rossby radius, likely large‐scale tracer at this scale. Elevated variances observed around fronts, caused isolated patches anomalies also large. By determining horizontal scales which effects internal wave heaving becomes dominant, we able calculate potential vorticity (PV) balanced flow field. As PV negative near zero symmetric instability might developed.

Abstract The eastern part of the Tsugaru Strait (located at ~ 41.5° N) is a remarkable region coastal flow system around Japan due to Warm Current (TgWC), an intensive eastward current that flows over its complex topography and exhibits marked tidal variation. TgWC has jetlike structure demonstrates drastic seasonal changes in path vertical structure. Using high-resolution dataset obtained from high-frequency radar (HFR) data assimilation experiment (JCOPE-T DA), we focused on frontal variation, which shorter than timescale, along axis relation meanders jet. We found variations with multiple timescales between 1 14 days, especially summer autumn. 14-day occurrence west side Strait, was consistent variation strait. zonal scale meander estimated by HFR matched several times larger internal deformation radius, JCOPE-T DA outputs showed crest such greater depths progresses surface. also suggested instabilities, indicating potential kinetic energy conversion mean eddy field. propagation speed several-day two-layer baroclinic instability. relatively high coherence wind autumn, during time strait switched easterly westerly. These imply effect north–south water mass mixing strait, including rapid acidification intensification stratification.

Abstract Examining localized nutrient supplies that facilitate broader-scale biological production is imperative for comprehending marine ecosystems. Nutrients transported vertically in specific hotspot areas reach the surface can be conveyed downstream by background currents, thereby augmenting over a wider expanse, including robust currents traversing seamounts. However, assessing influence of such transport on large-scale poses challenges due to spatiotemporal disparities. We present an analysis Tsugaru Strait, critical conduit linking Sea Japan and Pacific Ocean. Our investigation utilizes high-resolution current data acquired from long-term high-frequency radar system aligned with direct turbulence measurements. Shipboard observations unveil significant diffusive nitrate fluxes, surpassing open ocean levels factor 10 or more. The intensified was associated heightened density, indicative divergence field. A six-year statistical establishes positive correlation between this chlorophyll-a distribution, aligning formation area hundred-kilometre-scale anticyclonic Gyre. Therefore, Strait emerges as gyre, which renowned valuable fishing ground. This discovery carries implications monitoring conserving ecosystems ensure sustainability.
