Exposure to stressful life events is strongly associated with internalizing psychopathology, and identifying factors that reduce vulnerability stress-related problems critical for development of early interventions. Drawing on research from affective science, we tested whether high emotion differentiation—the ability specifically identify one’s feelings—buffers adolescents developing symptoms when exposed stress. Thirty completed a laboratory measure differentiation before an intensive yearlong longitudinal study in which exposure stress were assessed at both the moment level ( n = 4,921 experience-sampling assessments) month 355 monthly assessments). High negative positive attenuated moment-level coupling between perceived feelings depression, eliminated month-level associations anxiety symptoms. These results suggest buffers against depression face stress, perhaps by facilitating adaptive regulation.

Abstract Learning to use language in an adult-like way is a long-lasting process. This may particularly apply complex conceptual domains such as emotions. The present study examined children’s and adults’ patterns of emotion word usage regarding their convergence underlying semantic dimensions, the factors influencing ease learning. We assessed production words by 4- 11-year-old children ( N = 123) 27 adults M 37 years) using vignette test. found that older children, more they produced. Moreover, with increasing age, pattern converged adult usage. analysis for dimensions revealed one clear criterion—the differentiation positive versus negative emotions—for all adults. further broad covering are produced earlier way.
