Abstract Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) comprises a broad range of molecules in aquatic systems and is among the most complex molecular mixtures known. Here we show, by comparing detailed structural fingerprints individual formulae DOM from set four marine one freshwater environments, that major component molecularly indistinguishable these diverse samples. Molecular conformity was not only apparent co-occurrence thousands identical formulae, but also features those isomers collectively represent formula. The presence large pool compounds with likely result cascade degradation processes or common synthetic pathways ultimately lead to formation universal background, regardless origin history material. This novel insight impacts our understanding long-term turnover as underlying mechanisms are possibly universal.

The purpose of this review is to highlight progress in unraveling carbon cycling dynamics across the continuum landscapes, inland waters, coastal oceans, and atmosphere. Earth systems are intimately interconnected, yet most biogeochemical studies focus on specific components isolation. movement water drives cycle, and, as such, waters provide a critical intersection between terrestrial marine biospheres. Inland, estuarine, well studied regions near centers human population Northern hemisphere. However, many world's large river their receiving remain poorly characterized, particularly tropics, which contribute disproportionately fraction transformation organic matter dioxide, Arctic, where positive feedback mechanisms likely amplify global climate change. There gaps current coverage environmental observations along aquatic continuum. For example, tidally-influenced reaches major rivers near-shore around plumes often left out budgets due combination methodological constraints poor data coverage. We suggest that closing these could potentially alter estimates CO2 outgassing from surface atmosphere by several-fold. Finally, order identify constrain/embrace uncertainties budget estimations it important we further adopt statistical modeling approaches have become well-established fields oceanography paleoclimatology, for example.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the oceans is one of largest pools reduced carbon on Earth, comparable size to atmospheric CO 2 reservoir. A vast number compounds are present DOM, and they play important roles all major element cycles, contribute storage ocean, support marine ecosystems, facilitate interactions between organisms. At heart DOM cycle lie molecular-level relationships individual members ocean microbiome that produce consume them. In past, these connections have eluded clear definition because sheer numerical complexity both molecules microorganisms. The microbiome of the largest environment on Earth has been gradually revealing its secrets over four decades study. Despite dispersed nature substrates and transience surfaces, marine microbes drive essential transformations in all global elemental cycles. van Krevelen diagrams (O/C vs H/C ratios of elemental formulas) have been widely used in studies to obtain an estimation the main compound categories present environmental samples. However, limits defining a specific category based solely on O/C and formulas never accurately listed or proposed classify metabolites biological Furthermore, while can provide overview categories, such classification is inefficient because large overlap among different along both axes. We propose more accurate for samples analyzed by high-resolution mass spectrometry assessment C/H/O/N/P stoichiometric over 130 000 compounds classified 6 categories: lipids, peptides, amino sugars, carbohydrates, nucleotides, phytochemical (oxy-aromatic compounds). Our multidimensional (MSCC) constraints showed highly categorization with 98% accuracy representing substantial improvement any classic diagram. ABSTRACT Deep-ocean regions beyond the reach of sunlight contain an estimated 615 Pg dissolved organic matter (DOM), much which persists for thousands years. It is thought that bacteria oxidize DOM until it too dilute or refractory to support microbial activity. We analyzed five single-amplified genomes (SAGs) from abundant SAR202 clade dark-ocean bacterioplankton and found they encode multiple families paralogous enzymes involved in carbon catabolism, including several oxidative we hypothesize participate degradation cyclic alkanes. Groundwater comprises 95% of the liquid fresh water on Earth and contains a diverse mix dissolved organic matter (DOM) molecules which play significant role in global carbon cycle. Currently, storage times degradation pathways groundwater DOM are unclear, preventing an accurate estimate sources sinks for budgets. Here we reveal transformations aging using ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry combined with radiocarbon dating. Long-term anoxia lack photodegradation leads to removal oxidised build-up both reduced photodegradable formulae aerobically biolabile strong microbial signal. This contrasts pathway oxic marine, river, lake systems. Our findings suggest that processes such as extraction subterranean discharge oceans could result up 13 Tg highly photolabile released surface environments per year, where it can be rapidly degraded. These highlight importance considering
