Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is thought to control a wide range of reward, punishment, and uncertainty-related behaviors. However, how it does so unclear. Here, in Pavlovian procedure which monkeys displayed diverse repertoire reward-related, punishment-related, behaviors, we show that many ACC-neurons represent expected value uncertainty valence-specific manner, signaling or predictions about either rewards punishments. Other signal prediction information punishments by displaying excitation both (rather than one inhibition the other). This diversity valence representations may support role ACC behavioral states are enhanced reward punishment (e.g., vigilance) specific approach avoidance). Also, this first demonstration punishment-uncertainty signals brain suggests could be target for treatment disorders mood.Rewards elicit responses; however, neural circuits underlying such flexibility Here Monosov shows supported neurons anterior manner.

In spite of its familiar phenomenology, the mechanistic basis for mental effort remains poorly understood. Although most researchers agree that is aversive and stems from limitations in our capacity to exercise cognitive control, it unclear what gives rise those why they result an experience control as costly. The presence these costs also raises further questions regarding how best allocate minimize maximize attendant benefits. This review explores recent advances computational modeling empirical research aimed at addressing level psychological process neural mechanism, examining both exertion we manage limited resources. We conclude by identifying remaining challenges theoretical accounts well possible applications available findings understanding causes potential solutions apparent failures exert required us.

While smartphones and related mobile technologies are recognized as flexible powerful tools that, when used prudently, can augment human cognition, there is also a growing perception that habitual involvement with these devices may have negative lasting impact on users' ability to think, remember, pay attention, regulate emotion. The present review considers an intensifying, though still limited, area of research exploring the potential cognitive impacts smartphone-related habits, seeks determine in which domains functioning accruing evidence significant relationship between smartphone technology performance, scientific literature not yet mature enough endorse any firm conclusions. We focus our primarily three facets cognition clearly implicated public discourse regarding – memory, delay gratification then consider broader relationships habits everyday functioning. Along way, we highlight compelling findings, discuss limitations respect empirical methodology interpretation, offer suggestions for how field might progress toward more coherent robust inquiry.

The ability to adaptively regulate emotion is essential for mental and physical well-being. How should we organize the myriad ways people attempt their emotions? We explore utility of a framework that distinguishes among four fundamental classes regulation strategies. describes each strategy class in terms behavioral characteristics, underlying psychological processes supporting neural systems. Self-regulation is a core aspect of human functioning that helps facilitate the successful pursuit personal goals. There has been proliferation theories and models describing different aspects self-regulation both within outside psychology. All these provide insights about self-regulation, but sometimes they talk past each other, make only shallow contributions, or contributions are underappreciated by scholars working in adjacent areas. The purpose this article to integrate across many order refine vast literature on self-regulation. To achieve objective, we first review some more prominent coming from social psychology, personality cognitive neuroscience. We then based four key elements-level analysis, conflict, emotion, functioning-specifically identifying points convergence also insufficient emphasis. close with prescriptions for future research.

Self-control is often conceived as a battle between “hot” impulsive processes and “cold” deliberative ones. Heeding the angel on one shoulder leads to success; following demon other failure. feels like duality. What if that sensation misleading, despite how they feel, self-control decisions are just any choice? We argue form of value-based choice wherein options assigned subjective value decision made through dynamic integration process. articulate model can capture its phenomenology account for relevant behavioral neuroscientific data. This conceptualization links divergent scientific approaches, allows more robust precise hypothesis testing, suggests novel pathways improve self-control.
