Multidrug-resistant bacteria pose a serious health threat, especially in hospitals. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) facilitates the spread antibiotic resistance, virulence, and environmental persistence genes between nosocomial pathogens. We screened genomes 2173 bacterial isolates from healthcare-associated infections single hospital over 18 months, identified identical nucleotide regions belonging to distinct genera. To further resolve these shared sequences, we performed long-read sequencing on subset generated highly contiguous genomes. then tracked appearance ten different plasmids all genomes, found evidence plasmid independent transmission. Finally, two instances likely within individual patients, including one that transferred second patient. This work expands our understanding HGT healthcare settings, can inform efforts limit drug-resistant pathogens

Bacteria, similar to most organisms, have a love–hate relationship with metals: specific metal may be essential for survival yet toxic in certain forms and concentrations. Metal ions long history of antimicrobial activity received increasing attention recent years owing the rise resistance. The search antibacterial agents now encompasses ions, nanoparticles complexes (‘metalloantibiotics’). Although advanced clinic, metalloantibiotics are vast underexplored group compounds that could lead much-needed new class antibiotics. This Review summarizes developments this growing field, focusing on advances development metalloantibiotics, particular, those which mechanism action has been investigated. We also provide an overview alternative uses combat bacterial infections, including photodynamic therapy radionuclide diagnosis infections. Protoporphyrin IX iron complex (heme) is an important cofactor for oxygen transfer, storage, activation, and electron transfer when bound to the heme proteins hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochrome P450 c, respectively. In addition these prototypical proteins, there are emergent, critical roles of exchangeable/labile in signal transduction. Specifically, it has been shown that association/dissociation to/from heme-responsive sensors regulates numerous functions, including transcription, DNA binding, microRNA splicing, translation, protein kinase activity, degradation, K+ channel function, two-component transduction, many other functions. this review, we provide a comprehensive overview structure-function relationships describe new, additional as functional inhibitors activators. order complete description various heme-bound also mention novel chemical reaction centre aldoxime dehydratase, cis-trans isomerase, N-N bond formation, hydrazine formation S-S These unprecedented functions should be interest biological chemists. The growing increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to the search for new antibacterial agents capable of overcoming resistance problem. In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) have been increasingly used target as an alternative antibiotics. most promising nanomaterials biomedical applications are metal and oxide NPs, due their intrinsic activity. Although NPs show interesting properties, mechanisms underlying action still poorly understood, limiting use clinical applications. this review, overview activity will be provided, relating efficacy to: (i) bacterial strain; (ii) higher microbial organizations (biofilm); (iii) physico-chemical properties NPs. addition, strategies also discussed better evaluate feasibility different treatments adopted safety fields. Bioindication has become an indispensable part of water quality monitoring in most countries the world, with presence and abundance bioindicator taxa, mostly multicellular eukaryotes, used for biotic indices. In contrast, microbes (bacteria, archaea protists) are seldom as bioindicators routine assessments, although they have been recognized their importance environmental processes. Recently, use molecular methods revealed unexpected diversity within known functional groups novel metabolic pathways that particularly important energy nutrient cycling. various habitats, microbial communities respond to eutrophication, metals, natural or anthropogenic organic pollutants through changes function. this review, we evaluated common trends these changes, documenting value can be not only but also improving our understanding major processes lotic lentic environments. Current knowledge provides a solid foundation exploiting community structures diversity, well genes, programs. These measures combined into indices, resolution individual bioindicators. Deinococcus bacteria are famous for their extreme resistance to ionising radiation and other DNA damage- oxidative stress-generating agents. More than a hundred genes have been reported contribute radiation, desiccation and/or stress in radiodurans. These encode proteins involved repair, defence, regulation of yet unknown function or with an extracytoplasmic location. Here, we analysed the conservation resistance-associated radiation-resistant species. Strikingly, homologues dozens these absent one more For example, only few Deinococcus-specific regulatory present each Deinococcus, notably metallopeptidase/repressor pair IrrE/DdrO that controls radiation/desiccation response regulon. Inversely, some species possess D. radiodurans lacks, including repair consisting novel domain combinations, translesion polymerases, additional metalloregulators, redox-sensitive regulator SoxR manganese-containing catalase. Moreover, comparisons improved characterisation several regarding important conserved residues, cellular location possible protein–protein interactions. This comprehensive analysis indicates not but also large diversity molecular mechanisms even within genus.

Zinc (Zn) is one of the most abundantly found heavy metals in Earth’s crust and reported to be an essential trace metal required for growth living beings, with it being a cofactor major proteins, mediating regulation several immunomodulatory functions. However, its essentiality also runs parallel toxicity, which induced through various anthropogenic sources, constant exposure polluted sites, other natural phenomena. The bioavailability Zn attributable vegetables, beef, dairy products, are good source safe consumption by humans. conditions toxicity can occur overdosage supplements, increasing at alarming rate attributing lack awareness. Though humans treatable non-life-threatening condition, symptoms cause distress human activities lifestyle, including fever, breathing difficulty, nausea, chest pain, cough. In environment, generally soil water bodies, where introduced action weathering, release industrial effluents, respectively. Excessive levels these sources alter aquatic microbial diversity, thus affect absorption as well. Several Gram-positive -negative species, such Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus Streptococcus Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas Klebsiella Enterobacter respectively, have been promising agents bioremediation. Biostimulation and toxicity constitute the continuous response spectrum of a biological organism against physicochemical or factors. Among environmental agents capable inducing biostimulation are nanomaterials. On < 100 nm scale, nanomaterials impose both physical effects resulting from core’s corona’s surface properties, chemical related to composition functional groups. The purpose this review is describe impact on microorganisms plants, considering two most studied properties: size concentration. Using graphical analysis, presence biostimulation-toxicity shown different responses. In microorganisms, results showed high susceptibility Simultaneously, in hormetic was found concentration and, few cases, positive smaller when these were applied at higher level. With above, it concluded that: (1) more susceptible than (2) practically all seem induce responses (3) kind observed will depend complex way nanomateriaĺs characteristics, species with which they interact, form route application nature medium -soil, soil pore water, surfaces- where interaction occurs.
