Until recently, the field of sex chromosome evolution has been dominated by canonical unidirectional scenario, first developed Muller in 1918. This model postulates that chromosomes emerge from autosomes acquiring a sex-determining locus. Recombination reduction then expands outwards this locus, to maintain its linkage with sexually antagonistic/advantageous alleles, resulting Y or W degeneration and potentially culminating their disappearance. Based mostly on empirical vertebrate research, we challenge expand each conceptual step present observations numerous experts two parts theme issue

Abstract The Neotropical armored catfish Harttia is a valuable model for studying sex chromosome evolution, featuring two independently evolved male-heterogametic systems. This study examined satellitomes—sets of satellite DNAs—from four Amazonian species: H. duriventris (X 1 X 2 Y), rondoni (XY), punctata and villasboas Y). These species share homologous chromosomes, with their satellitomes showing high number DNAs (satDNAs), primarily located on centromeres or telomeres, varying by species. Each revealed distinct satDNA profile, independent amplification homogenization events occurring, suggesting an important role these repetitive sequences in differentiation short evolutionary time, especially recently originated chromosomes. Abstract Wildlife exhibits various sex-determination systems where sex chromosomes and environmental temperatures may both contribute to individual sexual development. The causes consequences of this variability are important questions for evolutionary ecology, especially in light ongoing change. Amphibians reptiles emerging as a key group studying these questions, with new data accumulating acceleratingly. We collected empirical from earlier databases, reviews primary literature create the most up-to-date database on herpetological determination. named our HerpSexDet, which currently features genetic temperature-dependent determination well reports reversal total 192 amphibian 697 reptile species. This dataset, we will regularly update future, facilitates interspecific comparative studies evolution its species-specific traits such life history conservation status, also help guiding future research by identifying species or higher taxa that potentially enlightening study environmentally driven reversal.

Abstract Background The genetic control of sex determination in teleost species is poorly understood. This partly because the diversity mechanisms that determine this large group vertebrates, including constitutive genes linked to chromosomes, polygenic mechanisms, environmental factors, hermaphroditism, and unisexuality. Here we use a de novo genome assembly New Zealand silver trevally ( Pseudocaranx georgianus ) together with sex-specific whole sequencing data detect sexually divergent genomic regions, identify candidate develop molecular makers. Results an unsexed (Trevally_v1) resulted final 579.4 Mb length, N50 25.2 Mb. Of assembled scaffolds, 24 were chromosome scale, ranging from 11 31 length. A total 28,416 annotated after 12.8 % was masked repetitive elements. Whole re-sequencing 13 wild sexed (seven males six females) identified two regions located on 6 kb region at proximal end 21. Blast analyses revealed similarity between one aromatase cyp19 (a1a/b) (E-value < 1.00E-25, identity > 78.8 %). Males contained higher numbers heterozygous variants both while females showed very low read-depth, indicative male-specificity region. Molecular markers developed subsequently tested 96 histologically-sexed fish (42 54 females). Three amplified absolute correspondence (positive males, negative Conclusions number combined absence these support XY sex-determination model, indicating trevally_v1 male specimen. system contrasts ZW model documented closely related carangid species. Our results indicate sex-determining function cyp19a1a -like gene, suggesting pathway somewhat conserved family. resources here will facilitate future comparative work, enable improved insights into varied pathways teleosts. marker study be valuable resource for aquaculture selective breeding programmes, determining ratios populations.

Genes involved in gonadal sex differentiation have been traditionally thought to be fairly conserved across vertebrates, but this has lately questioned. Here, we performed the first comparative analysis of transcriptomes from fish mammals. Our results unambiguously show an extraordinary overall variability gene activation and repression programs without a phylogenetic pattern. During differentiation, genes such as dmrt1 , sox9 amh cyp19a foxl2 were consistently either male- or female-enriched species while many with greatest expression change within each not. We also found that downregulation opposite sex, which had only quantified mouse model, was prominent rest vertebrates. Finally, report 16 novel markers (e.g., fshr dazl ) 11 signaling pathways. propose viewing vertebrate hierarchical network, hub alongside less connected nodes. This proposed framework implies evolutionary pressures may impact based on their level connectivity.

Abstract Chameleons are well-known lizards with unique morphology and physiology, but their sex determination has remained poorly studied. Madagascan chameleons of the genus Furcifer have cytogenetically distinct Z W chromosomes occasionally 1 2 /Z multiple neo-sex chromosomes. To identify gene content chromosomes, we microdissected sequenced F. oustaleti (ZZ/ZW) pardalis (Z W). In addition, genomes a male female lateralis performed comparative coverage analysis between sexes. Despite notable heteromorphy distinctiveness in heterochromatin content, share approximately 90% content. This finding demonstrates poor correlation degree differentiation at cytogenetic level. The test homology based on comparison copy number variation revealed that heterogamety differentiated stable for least 20 million years. These co-opted role same genomic region as viviparous mammals, lacertids geckos Paroedura , which makes these groups excellent model studies convergent divergent evolution

Traditionally, dominant breeders have been considered to be able control the reproduction of other individuals in multimember groups that high variance reproductive success/reproductive skew (e.g., forced sterility/coercion conspecifics eusocial animals; sex-change suppression sequential hermaphrodites). These actions are typically presented as active impositions by reproductively individuals. However, how can regulate physiology others? Alternatively, all contestants make decisions, and less successful self-downregulate presence breeders. Shifting perspective from a top-down manipulation broader view, which includes contenders, using multitaxon approach, we propose unifying framework for resolution conflicts based on signalling rather than control, along continuum levels strategic regulation reproduction.
