Abstract. Sea level rise is associated with increased coastal erosion and inundation. However, the effects of sea change on shoreline can be enhanced or counteracted by vertical land motion morphological processes. Therefore, knowledge about individual contributions change, morphodynamics changes necessary to make informed choices for climate adaptation, such as applying defence measures. Here, we assess potential remote-sensing techniques detect a geometrical relationship between retreat case study at Terschelling barrier island northern Dutch coast. First, find that observations from satellite radar altimetry retracked ALES represent variations 2002 2022 when region extract time series chosen carefully. Second, results cross-shore satellite-derived shorelines extracted optical images considerably, depending made tidal correction parameter settings during computation series. While absolute positions differ average more than 200 m, trend differences are below 1 m yr−1. Third, intersecting 1992 elevation time-variable level, inundation through caused −0.3 yr−1 2022. The actual movement in this period was −2.8 −3.2 yr−1, leading interpretation larger part driven morphodynamics. We conclude combination altimetry, provides valuable information influence rise, movements.

Abstract Beaches are highly variable environments and respond to changes in wave forcing, themselves modulated by climate variability. Here, we analyze three high‐quality beach profile data sets robustly investigate, for the first time, link between shoreline change, forcing variability along Atlantic coast of Europe. Winter conditions strongly associated with North Oscillation (NAO) Western Europe Pressure Anomaly (WEPA), WEPA explaining 50%–80% winter power Shoreline during is also linked NAO WEPA, 25% both unrelated El Nino Southern Oscillation. In addition atmospherically‐forced morphological response, change depends on antecedent morphology as evidenced significant correlations summer/winter response position at start each season.

Previously, this species was classified as deciduous since it retained at least 40% its leaves sustain basal gas exchange rates. The discrepancy in classification arises from differences methodologies, with research being conducted field under natural conditions. demonstrates negative correlation between rainfall specific leaf area (SLA), highlighting plants smaller SLA are more drought-tolerant. As escalating environmental pressures threaten the world’s beaches, understanding driving factors influencing their geomorphological changes is of critical global importance. This study focuses on morphological Sigeng beach adjacent to Changhua River Mouth in Hainan Island, China through decadal monitoring shoreline and profile topography tries illuminate natural anthropogenic that drove changes. The results showed undergone significant between 2008 2024, with notable accretion at northernmost southernmost general erosion other sections. change rates ranged -18.4 m/yr 13.0 m/yr, average rate -1.9 indicating overall erosion. net longshore sediment transport (LST) along was estimated combination cross-shore (profile) (shoreline) direction LST were southward, except for northern section where northward due diffraction NE waves by long sand spit northernmost. each varied from 0.8×10 4 m 3 /yr 3.5×10 /yr. main controlling evolution, including seasonal wave action reduction fluvial load, followed coastal structures, typhoon events, aeolian transport, sea level rise, discussed. Subsequently, adaptive protection measures, nourishment, accompanied groin system or multiple detached breakwaters proposed combat analysis presented this helpful understand morphodynamics predict future beaches.

Abstract. More than 10 % of the world's population lives in coastal areas that are less m above sea level (also known as low-elevation zone – LECZ). These major importance for local economy and transport home to some richest ecosystems. At same time, they quite susceptible extreme storms rise. During last few years, numerous open-access global datasets have been published, describing different aspects environment such elevation, land use, waves, water levels, exposure. However, studies, it is crucial this information available at specific locations and, regional studies or upscaling purposes, also important data provided a spatially consistent manner. Here we create Global Coastal Characteristics (GCC) database, with 80 indicators covering geophysical, hydrometeorological, socioeconomic high alongshore resolution 1 km ∼ 730 000 points along ice-free coastline. To achieve this, use latest freely newly created high-resolution transect system. The geophysical include slopes elevation maxima, presence vegetation sandy beaches. hydrometeorological involve level, wave conditions, meteorological conditions (rain temperature). Additionally, indices related population, GDP, critical infrastructure (roads, railways, ports, airports) presented. While derived from existing datasets, these can be valuable screening especially data-poor locations. GCC dataset accessed https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8200199 (Athanasiou et al., 2024).

Disruptions in ecosystem services increased vulnerability, particular coastal zones, are expected many parts world. In this comment, we review latest seasonal forecasts showcase potential for predicting world’s coastlines based on data-driven modeling.
