Metazoans comprise multiple physical niches (“microenvironments”), each colonized by unique microbiomes that contribute to their hosts’ evolutionary dynamics, influencing health, physiology, and adaptation changing environments. Most wildlife microbiome studies focus on higher metazoans host microenvironments, while of lower species often concentrate a single microenvironment, sometimes pooling whole bodies or specimens. This is particularly evident in small-sized animals, such as freshwater meiofaunal invertebrates, thus impeding holistic understanding assembly across microenvironments its relation with population genetics. Leveraging the anostracan fairy shrimp Branchinecta , which has easily discernible organs expected high levels intraspecific genetic divergence, we aimed investigate processes test phylosymbiosis signal two (gill intestine) four populations gaini within Maritime Antarctica, using 16S rRNA metabarcoding. Our results showed gill intestine harbor strikingly different resulting from B. ecological filtering surrounding environment microbial community. Both exhibit respective core microbiomes, yet gill’s narrower constitutes smaller proportion overall bacterial community compared intestine. Within ( i.e. sampling site), assembles through distinct eco-evolutionary both mostly stochastically (ecological drift) deterministically (variable selection) Across populations, variable selection dominates driving compositional divergence microenvironment although lesser extent gill. Lastly, our study reveals robust correlation between structure composition, providing evidence anostracans. Contrastingly, was less pronounced microbiome. We discuss potential differences may underlie difference strength phylosymbiosis. highlights relevance considering testing hypothesis better understand intricate relationships hosts microbiomes.

Abstract Background Evolutionary tradeoffs between life-history strategies are important in animal evolution. Because microbes can influence multiple aspects of host physiology, including growth rate and susceptibility to disease or stress, changes animal-microbial symbioses have the potential mediate tradeoffs. Scleractinian corals provide a biodiverse, data-rich, ecologically-relevant system explore this idea. Results Using comparative approach, we tested if coral microbiomes correlate with across 425 million years evolution by conducting cross-species microbiome survey (the “Global Coral Microbiome Project”) combining results long-term global prevalence trait data. Abstract Sponges are increasingly recognized as an ecologically important taxon on coral reefs, representing significant biomass and biodiversity where sponges have replaced scleractinian corals. Most sponge species can be divided into two symbiotic states based symbiont community structure abundance (i.e., the microbiome), characterized high microbial (HMA) or low (LMA) sponges. Across Caribbean, of HMA LMA differ in metabolic capacity, well their trophic ecology. A metagenetic analysis 16 S rRNA metagenomes showed that microbiomes more functionally diverse than microbiomes, offer greater functional capacity redundancy, encode for biosynthesis secondary metabolites. Stable isotope analyses primarily consume dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from external autotrophic sources, live particulate (POM) form bacterioplankton, respectively, resulting a degree resource competition between these states. As many reefs undergone phase shifts coral- to macroalgal-dominated role DOM, potential future declines POM due decreased picoplankton productivity, may result increased chemically defended tropical reefs.

The sponge microbiome underpins host function through provision and recycling of essential nutrients in a nutrient poor environment. Genomic data suggest that carbohydrate degradation, carbon fixation, nitrogen metabolism, sulphur metabolism supplementation B-vitamins are central microbial functions. However, validation beyond the genomic potential symbiont pathways is rarely explored. To evaluate metagenomic predictions, we sequenced metagenomes metatranscriptomes three common coral reef sponges: Ircinia ramosa, microconulosa Phyllospongia foliascens. Multiple active enzymes were expressed by Poribacteria, Bacteroidota Cyanobacteria symbionts, suggesting these lineages have role assimilating dissolved organic matter. Expression entire for fixation multiple compound transformations observed all sponges. Gene expression anaerobic (denitrification nitrate reduction) more than aerobic (nitrification), where only I. ramosa nitrification pathway. Finally, while biosynthetic was common, additional transporter genes far limited. Overall, highlight consistencies disparities between metatranscriptomic results when inferring activity, uncovering new taxa contribute to health their via exchange.
