Abstract Cold welding of metals at the nanoscale has been demonstrated to play a significant role in bottom‐up manufacturing and self‐healing processes nanostructures nanodevices. However, mechanism is not well understood. In this study, comprehensive demonstration cold process gold nanorods with different modes presented through situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results molecular dynamics simulations reveal that are welded facet‐dependent atomic surface diffusion rearrangement along {100} facets. density functional theory calculations indicate preferred coalescence two surfaces thermodynamically favorable. Unlike prevalent “oriented attachment” nanoparticle coalescence, misalignment nanorod orientations local stresses can induce grain boundaries stacking faults interface.

The past few decades have witnessed significant development in intercalation chemistry research aimed at precisely controlling material properties. Intercalation, as a powerful surface and interface synthesis strategy, facilitates the insertion of external guests into van der Waals (vdW) gaps two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, inducing various modulation effects (the weakening interlayer interactions, changes electronic structures, interfacial charge transfer, symmetry manipulation) to tailor properties while preserving intralayer covalent bonds. Importantly, benefiting from very diverse structures organic molecules, their enables integration molecules with wide array 2D resulting creation numerous organic–inorganic hybrid superlattices exotic properties, which brings extensive potential applications fields such spintronics, superconductor electronics, optoelectronics, thermoelectrics. Herein, based on recent advancements systems, we briefly discuss summary classification guest species. We also three induced by further introduce intriguing modulations physicochemical including superconductivity, magnetism, thermoelectricity thermal conductivity, chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effects, interlayer-confined chemical reaction.
