Here, we ask whether such a strategy creates adverse consequences in form lowered trust pandemic response among individuals, which could jeopardize their compliance with broader set health interventions. As our empirical case, use press conference held by Danish government 8 November 2021, where COVID‐19‐vaccination passports were reintroduced, part, pressure people take up vaccine. We analyse effects using daily, nationally representative survey data (total N = 24,934) employing difference‐in‐differences design. demonstrate that decreased management 11 percentage points while remained high vaccinated individuals. Moralistic cost also reduced collective action motivation and coping appraisal and, it increased societal threat people, failed do so Our findings imply decision‐makers moralized as intervention should be aware its potential unintended consequences.

Abstract Affective polarization, a concept that originated in the USA, has increasingly been studied Europe’s multi-party systems. This form of polarization refers to extent which party supporters dislike one another – or, more technically, difference between positive feelings towards one’s own political and negative other parties. Measuring this gap systems requires researchers make various important decisions relating conceptualization measurement. Often, our focus could instead lie on assessing partisan hostility or affect, is easier measure. While recent research affective Europe already taught USA lot, both about conflict Europe, I nevertheless suggest field faces four challenges, namely developing better measures, sophisticated theories, clearer accounts polarization’s importance successful ways reducing if indeed desirable.
