A predominantly fish-eating diet was envisioned for the sail-backed theropod dinosaur Spinosaurus aegyptiacus when its elongate jaws with subconical teeth were unearthed a century ago in Egypt. Recent discovery of high-spined tail that skeleton, however, led to bolder conjecture S. first fully aquatic dinosaur. The ‘aquatic hypothesis’ posits slow quadruped on land but capable pursuit predator coastal waters, powered by an expanded tail. We test these functional claims skeletal and flesh models . assembled CT-based reconstruction based fossils, which we added internal air muscle create posable model. That model shows bipedal deep water unstable, slow-surface swimmer (<1 m/s) too buoyant dive. Living reptiles similar spine-supported sails over trunk are used display rather than propulsion, nearly all extant secondary swimmers have reduced limbs fleshy flukes. New fossils also show ranged far inland. Two stages clarified evolution , is best understood as semiaquatic ambush piscivore frequented margins inland waterways.

Spinosaurids are some of the most enigmatic Mesozoic theropod dinosaurs due to their unique adaptations aquatic environments and relative scarcity. Their taxonomy has proven be especially problematic. Recent discoveries from Western Europe in general, specifically Iberia, provide best specimens for understanding phylogeny, leading description spinosaurid Vallibonavenatrix cani recognition Iberian dinosaur Camarillasaurus cirugedae as one them. Portuguese associated remains (ML1190) Papo Seco Formation (early Barremian) were previously assigned Baryonyx walkeri but new material recovered 2020 along with phylogenetic analyses suggests a different placement, making revision necessary. Here we show that these not attributable , genus species, Iberospinus natarioi gen. et sp. nov. The taxon is characterized by presence single Meckelian foramen sulcus, straight profile ventral surface dentary distal thickening acromion process pubis between other characters. sister clade formed Suchomimus outside Spinosaurinae when Vallibonaventrix excluded analysis. this reinforces Iberia hotspot spinosaur biodiversity, several endemic taxa region. As expected clade, displays highly vascularized neurovascular network. morphometric analysis parts skeleton (pedal phalanx caudal vertebrae, among others) shows an intermediate condition basal tetanurans spinosaurines.

Abstract A new member of Spinosauridae from the Enciso Group (uppermost Barremian–lower Aptian) Igea (La Rioja, Spain) is here erected on basis axial, pelvic girdle, and hindlimb elements that exhibit a unique combination characters. Riojavenatrix lacustris gen. et sp. nov. one latest Iberian European spinosaurid taxa. It retains triangular pubic boot, like megalosaurids, medial condyle femur shows transitional stage between anteroposteriorly oriented long axis non-spinosaurid theropods posteromedially Spinosauridae. The record Iberia ranges late Hauterivian–early Barremian to Barremian–early Aptian so far, both oldest most recent evidence comes Cameros Basin, where remains are especially abundant in deposits. review has allowed us dismiss presence genus Baryonyx Iberia; hence, only Camarillasaurus, Iberospinus, Protathlitis, nov., Vallibonavenatrix considered be present Early Cretaceous Iberia. According this study, youngest baryonychines fossil record.

The reconstruction of behavioural patterns performed by non-avian dinosaurs is an important task palaeontology in order to globally understand how these animals interacted with their environment. Their relation aquatic lifestyles has always been intriguing question that extensively studied during the last decades, especially focused on some specific groups. present work describes a new tracksite 27 swimming tracks located fluvial setting from Lower Cretaceous Urbion Group La Rioja (Spain). They are preserved as natural casts sizes between 8.5 and 29.2 cm predominant orientation. have classified into 6 different morphotypes according morphology, grouped 5 categories depending pes-substrate interactions, following proposal Romilio et al. (2013). Some were produced while animal was moving partial or complete buoyancy, displacement conducted water sediment impulsion, not just mere paddling. Other could be impressed bottom-walked, when trackmaker touched digit tips ground vertically sub-vertically. This confirms capabilities groups interact shallow environments where they print pedes moved, either buoyancy vertical component column. It also contributes better understanding track morphologies dependent pes-sediment interaction environment more than differences pes configuration itself, causing high variability footprints even belong same trackway. classification good guiding principle avoid problematics about ichnotaxonomical definition.

In the last decade, Iberian Peninsula has become a hot spot in understanding of early evolutionary history large-bodied theropods from Early Cretaceous, especially for Spinosauridae and Carcharodontosauridae families. To date, at least five species spinosaurids one carcharodontosaurid inhabited region during Barremian. However, discovery new fossil remains suggests that such diversity medium- to large-sized could be even higher. Here, we describe an unpublished large theropod tooth two caudal vertebrae collected late 70s upper Barremian strata Arcillas de Morella Formation (Morella, eastern Spain). The element displays series features allow its identification as cf. Protathlitis, while vertebral elements are tentatively attributed indeterminate carcharodontosaurid. Interestingly, these different those Concavenator, allowing speculation about occurrence another allosauroids Cretaceous apart famed humpbacked dinosaurs with some reminiscence Acrocanthosaurus. Therefore, findings clearly illustrate significance any depicting before final break-up Pangea Peninsula.

Metriacanthosaurid theropods represent a basal-branching lineage of tetanurans. Members this clade are mainly medium to large-sized and lived in Laurasia during the Middle Jurassic Early Cretaceous. In clade, Sinraptor dongi , hepingensis Yangchuanosarus shangyouensis from Late well represented by nearly complete specimens, but incompleteness taxa hinders our knowledge origin early evolution Metriacanthosauridae. This paper describes new genus species metriacanthosaurids, Yuanmouraptor jinshajiangensis gen. et sp. nov, Zhanghe Formation Yunnan Province, China. The taxon is cranium anterior section vertebral column including cervical series first dorsal vertebra. can be diagnosed based on following autapomorphies: process postorbital sheet-shaped keeping consistent depth; ventral ramus bearing laterally twisted trough running along its lateral surface; surface axial intercentrum parallel with that centrum; discontinuity inclination anterodorsal margin third fourth vertebrae; strongly posteriorly elongated epipophyses deeply excavated pneumatic foramina vertebra; subrectangular neural spines posterior vertebrae.
