A digital heat early warning system for older adults

Abstract
Extreme
heat
events
lead
to
considerable
health
burden
and
are
becoming
more
severe
frequent,
calling
for
the
development
of
effective
population-based
individualised
early
warning
systems.
We
developed
an
system
tested
it
in
78
older
adults’
(
≥
65
years)
homes
Southeast
Queensland,
Australia.
Quantitative
qualitative
data
from
this
proof-of-concept
testing
study
showed
that
Ethos
performed
well
on
a
standard
usability
scale
(mean
score
System
Usability
Scale).
Following
summer-time
use
system,
there
were
increases
preparedness

marginal
homogeneity

but
no
significant
risk
perception
or
uptake
low-cost
cooling
measures
(e.g.,

Cancer Treatment Disruption by Residence Region in the Aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and María in Puerto Rico

Since
2017,
Puerto
Rico
has
faced
environmental,
economic,
and
political
crises,
leading
to
the
emigration
of
healthcare
workers
weakening
system.
These
challenges
have
affected
cancer
treatment
continuity,
exacerbating
access
island-wide.
In
this
study,
we
estimate
effect
residence
region
on
disruption
following
Hurricanes
Irma
María
(2017).
Telephone
surveys
were
conducted
with
241
breast
colorectal
patients
aged
40
older
who
diagnosed
within
six
months
before
hurricanes
receiving
at
time
hurricanes.
Treatment
was
defined
as
any
pause
in
surgery,
chemotherapy,
radiotherapy,
or
oral
due
Prevalence
ratios
(PRs)
by
estimated
using
San
Juan
Metropolitan
Area
(SJMA)
reference.
Fifty-nine
percent
respondents
reported
disruption;
among
them,
half
experienced
disruptions
lasting
more
than
30
days,
14%
these
enduring
longer
90
days.
Adjusted
models
showed
a
48%
higher
prevalence
outside
SJMA
(PR
=
1.48,
95%
CI:
1.06-2.07).
Specific
geographic
regions
(Arecibo,
Bayamón,
Caguas,
Mayagüez)
exhibited
prevalence.
findings
emphasize
need
for
disaster
preparedness
strategies
that
ensure
equitable
all
environmental
calamities.
