Diversity and Representation in Developmental EEG: Participant Recruitment and Reporting

Electroencephalography
(EEG)
is
one
of
the
main
neuroscientific
measures
used
with
infants
and
children
to
identify
potential
biomarkers
cognitive
social
developmental
processes.
Given
implications
EEG
research
within
policy,
clinical,
educational
domains,
it
important
ensure
that
reported
results
are
generalizable
reproducible.
In
this
review,
provide
an
initial
assessment
previous
current
practices
regarding
participant
recruitment
demographic
reporting,
we
carried
out
a
systematic
review
six
journals
publishing
most
pediatric
studies
between
2011-2023.
We
identified
700
articles
reporting
on
(N
>
80,000).

did
not
complete
basic
information
(e.g.,
race,
ethnicity,
socioeconomic
status,
geographical
location).
This
trend
persisted
across
years
publication,
suggesting
continued
underreporting.
However,
demographics
differed
journals,
solutions

improving
practices.

mostly
White
participants
(78%)
from
North
America
Western
Europe
(85%).

Abstract
There
is
a
growing
imperative
to
understand
the
neurophysiological
impact
of
our
rapidly
changing
and
diverse
technological,
social,
chemical,
physical
environments.
To
untangle
multidimensional
interacting
effects
requires
data
at
scale
across
populations,
taking
measurement
out
controlled
lab
environment
into
field.
Electroencephalography
(EEG),
which
has
correlates
with
various
environmental
factors
as
well
cognitive
mental
health
outcomes,
advantage
both
portability
cost-effectiveness
for
this
purpose.
However,
numerous
field
researchers
spread
locations,
quality
issues
researcher

time
due
insufficient
participants

quickly
become
unmanageable
expensive
problems.
In
programs
we
have
established
in
India
Tanzania,
demonstrate
that
appropriate
training,
structured
teams,
daily
automated
analysis

assessments

throughput
quality.
Over
30-week
period,
research
teams
were
able
maintain
an
average
25.6
subjects
per
week,
collecting
from
sample
7,933
ranging
Hadzabe
hunter-gatherers
office
workers.
Furthermore,
computed
first
2,400
records
using
two
common
methods,
PREP
FASTER,
was
comparable
benchmark
datasets
conditions.
Altogether
resulted
