Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), Hermetia illucens, present a transformative approach to sustainable aquaculture and waste management by converting organic into nutrient-rich biomass. This study highlights BSFL-derived products as alternative for aquafeeds, delivering essential nutrients significant concentrations of bioactive antioxidative polyphenols. We evaluated five types—Kitchen Waste (KW), Agricultural (AW), Aquaculture Sludge (AS), Offal (AO), Mixed diet (MX)—assessing their impact on BSFL growth, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), bioconversion, Protein Efficiency (PER), survival, nutritional composition, including Total Polyphenol Concentration (TPC). is the first report document quantify transfer polyphenols from substrates larvae, showing that fed plant-based feeds contained significantly higher (5.8–7.4 mg GAE/100 g) TPC than those with an animal-based feed (0.60–0.9 (p < 0.05). Our findings emphasize potential integrate valorization circular economy frameworks, reduce waste, enhance aquafeeds’ functional properties, contributing ocean sustainability global transition more practices.

Chitin and its deacetylated derivative, chitosan, are biopolymers of significant interest due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, wide-ranging applications in biomedical, environmental, industrial fields. The exploitation crustaceans as the traditional source chitosan raises concerns about overfishing ecological sustainability. Modern insect farming, contrast, offers advantages such a circular insect-based economy leading reduced carbon footprint. This review explores potential insect-derived an alternative, emphasizing environmental benefits during production, functional properties, applications. Several aspects key analytical techniques for chitin characterization, including photometric, chromatographic, spectroscopic methods, also discussed. underscores versatility biomedical applications, wound healing drug delivery, well agriculture, packaging, wastewater treatment.

Abstract Background Insects, such as Black Soldier Flies ( Hermetia illucens ), are increasingly used sustainable animal feed ingredients that can be reared on plentiful organic substrates agricultural residues and pre-consumer food waste. Genetically engineering insects to heterologously express additive enzymes has the potential generate more value from waste, while improving livestock health productivity. Phytases widely hydrolyse phosphate groups myo-inositol backbone of phytic acid, a rich antinutrient compound monogastric animals cannot efficiently digest. Dietary phytase supplementation improves absorption phosphorous, proteins, cationic nutrients, mitigating negative environmental effects acid excreta. Results We evaluated using biomanufacture microbial by model insect, Drosophila melanogaster , phytases. One histidine phytase, three beta propellor phytases, purple phosphatases, one PTP-like were selected for screening in D. . Transgenic flies expressing AppA E. coli had 27.82 FTU/g activity, which exceeds 0.5-1.0 required feed. Maximum activity expressed was observed at pH 5 55 °C, however, than 50% present 25 °C 2. Here we demonstrate may suitable hosts heterologous expression enzyme with applications nutrition waste valorisation.
