Abstract Atmospheric humidity is usually drier in cities than the surrounding rural areas, a phenomenon known as urban dry island (UDI) effect. However, response of atmospheric to hot weather versus settings remains unknown. Using long‐term summer (June–August) observations at 1662 stations over 1961–2020, we find that China dominated by drying trends (i.e., increasing vapor pressure deficit (VPD)). These are aggravated on days and amplified urbanization, is, UDI effect stronger weather. This amplification more prominent humid arid regions. Attributions show VPD‐based explained increased contribution air temperature southeastern specific northern China. We suggest adaptations required mitigate adverse combined effects heatwaves UDIs.
