Significance Predicting how ecological communities respond to change requires an understanding of the direct effects environment and indirect that emerge when is propagated through food webs interacting species. A probabilistic, dynamic framework for inference identifies these environment–species interactions. Results show environmental translate into nonlinear responses, they can be estimated from data, insight provide on relative importance (through other species) responses change. Abstract Field data on chlorophyll distribution are investigated in a two-dimensional spatial domain of the Mediterranean Sea by using for phytoplankton abundances an advection-diffusion-reaction model, which includes real values physical and biological variables. Abstract The Weddell Gyre (WG) is one of the main oceanographic features Southern Ocean south Antarctic Circumpolar Current which plays an influential role in global ocean circulation as well gas exchange with atmosphere. Estimation of intra- and interspecific interactions from time-series on species-rich communities is challenging due to the high number potentially interacting species pairs. The previously proposed sparse model overcomes this challenge by assuming that most pairs do not interact. We propose an alternative does assume any are necessarily zero, but summarizes influences individual a small community-level drivers. drivers defined as linear combinations abundances, they may thus represent e.g. total abundance all or relative proportions different functional groups. show with simulated real data how our approach can be used compare hypotheses community structure. Mucous-mesh grazers (pelagic tunicates and thecosome pteropods) are common in oceanic waters efficiently capture, consume repackage particles many orders of magnitude smaller than themselves. They feed using an adhesive mucous mesh to capture prey from ambient seawater. Historically, their grazing process has been characterized as non-selective, depending only on the size particle pore dimensions mesh. The purpose this review is reverse assumption by reviewing recent evidence that shows mucous-mesh feeding can be selective. We focus large planktonic microphages a model selective mucus because important roles ocean food web: bacterivores, for higher trophic levels, exporters carbon via aggregates, faecal pellets jelly-falls. identify functional variations filter mechanics hydrodynamics different taxa. strategy depends not pores, but also shape surface properties, mechanics, grazer behaviour. As these organisms remain critically understudied, we conclude suggesting priorities future research.

Mesophotic habitats, hosting benthic assemblages totally unknown and unexpected in the early 2000s, are attracting an increasing interest from scientists.
