Sunscreens can help protect the skin from solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is harmful to human health. However, traditional sunscreens penetrate skin, raising concerns about their safety. Therefore, fabrication of a sunscreen with biocompatible, UV-shielding, and antioxidant properties pertinent. Herein, simple method involving self-polymerization dopamine polydopamine (PDA) was proposed for surface modification poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) fabricate nanocrystal/polydopamine/poly(vinyl (CNC/PDA/PVA) hydrogels. Compression tests revealed that CNC/PDA/PVA hydrogel had compression strength 5.0 MPa. After UV exposure 2400 h, PVA decreased markedly 3.5 1.5 MPa, whereas slightly 4.8 Mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH-3T3) cell experiments showed exhibited excellent biocompatibility. A decrease in residual 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) content 100.0% 4.0% implied strong capacity hydrogel. Notably, UV–vis spectroscopy analysis vivo mouse demonstrated blocked approximately 99.0% light prevented UV-induced tissue injury, respectively. Hydrogels have drawn intensive attention as emerging materials for various applications in wearable sensors, soft robotics, and implantable devices. However, fabricating hydrogels with UV-shielding antioxidant properties still remains a challenge. Herein, we prepared biocompatible 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl-lignin/polyacrylic acid (AHP-lignin/PAA) self-adhesion, conductivity, UV shielding, activity sensors by the incorporation of lignin into PAA. The structure, lap shear strength, biocompatibility were characterized using UV–vis spectrometer, universal testing machine, cell test. showed strong adhesion to substrates. AHP-lignin/PAA had excellent shielding free radical scavenging capacity. Meanwhile, exhibited sensitivity tiny changes low pressure. Multifunctional cotton textiles that are highly breathable desirable in a broad range of applications. However, it is still big challenge to scale up production such multifunctional textiles. Herein, we developed simple, scalable, and benign strategy fabricate via mild surface modification. Abstract Lignin exhibits a long‐active UV‐blocking property due to its macromolecular aromatic structure and unique semiquione‐quione‐hydroquione transition. However, poor absorbance in UVA region (320–400 nm) irregular aggregation are still the obstacles. Herein, active spirapyrane (SP‐Br) is synthesized covalently introduced into alkali lignin (AL) construct photo‐stimulated UV‐absorbing enhancement sunscreen actives (AL‐SP n ). The introduction of SP significantly improved AL effectively eased. When optimal AL‐SP 3 solution exposed UV irradiation, color turned purple, further as unconjugated transformed conjugated merocyanine (MC) structure. light removed, recovered yellow. antioxidant endow reversible SP‐MC transformation with good cyclic stability. As‐prepared based exhibit obvious effect. sun protection factor (SPF) from 23 89 after 4 h can maintain high performance for another 8 h. Lignin nanospheres with broad-spectrum UV adsorption and excellent antioxidant properties were obtained by demethoxylation of alkali lignin (AL) grafting the benzophenone moiety (UV-0) followed a reverse self-assembly. The critical wavelength (λc) optimal AL-UV03 sample was ∼375 nm, while UVA/UVB ratio reached 0.84. Abstract Sustainable and environmentally friendly UV‐shielding materials offer new opportunities in the formulation of next generation cosmetic products. Cinnamate‐functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (Cin‐CNCs) prepared by esterifying CNCs with cinnamoyl chloride display strong UV absorption high visible light transmittance. They are suitable for use as nanofillers sunscreen transparent polymer films. The aqueous Cin‐CNC dispersion is waterborne, alcohol‐free, nonwhitening, waterproof, photo‐stable, possesses a sun protection factor (SPF). SPF more than twice that popular commercial at similar concentration. Cin‐CNCs can serve reinforcing hydrophilic hydrophobic matrices. polyvinyl alcohol polystyrene films incorporated excellent capacity their Young's moduli significantly enhanced.

The natural inspired ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing function of lignin has been widely used in cosmetics and photothermal materials; however, its long-acting UV-blocking mechanism is still unclear. Herein, three organosolv lignins (OLs) were extracted from different botanical resources under mild conditions. These OLs preserved the native structure lignin, best one was chosen to investigate perspective radicals. Results showed that 136% fresh semiquinone (SQ) radicals formed when OL irradiated UV light for 4 h, beyond half these newly generated readily after withdrawing irradiation. generation reduction SQ exhibited good photoresponsivity cyclic stability, indicating there an SQ-based hydroquinone/quinone dynamic transformation. After 1 h irradiation, radical phenolic hydroxyl contents sun protection factor OL-based sunscreen increased by 110, 10, 61%, respectively. 12 antioxidant property only weakened a little, while performance better than initial state. color darkened at time then turned white gradually. This research paves way understanding long-term application biomass lignin.
