Abstract Siloxane-based side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (SCLCEs) containing cholesteryl 4-(undec-10-en-1-yloxy)benzoate mesogenic unit are described. The cholesteric mesogen was dimesomorphic and displayed a smectic A nematic phases having phase range of 69°C 32°C respectively. Four (polydomain powders) were synthesized by employing the LC mesogen, polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) backbone four different cross-linkers (alkyl, phenyl, biphenyl azo) through hydrosilylation reaction. All found to be stable up 300°C exhibited an intercalated lamellar structure. Among studied, wide observed for LCE 4 with azo cross-linker 1 alkyl low range. photoisomerization (due presence azo- group) investigated in toluene photostationary state trans-to-cis conversion at 150 s. polymeric films also prepared. noticeable bending response thermal stimulus alkyl, phenyl which more pronounced cross-linker.

Side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (SCLCEs) containing a common cholesteric monomer but different cross-linkers (CLs) are described. These polysiloxane-based were synthesised following hydrosilylation reaction in which vinyl-terminated and divinyl-terminated CL appended to polymethylhydrosiloxane(PMHS) backbone presence of platinum catalyst. Four such by varying the CLs-an alkyl CL, phenyl-containing biphenyl-based an azobenzene CL. Thermal, mesomorphic properties, swelling behavior, mechanical actuation properties discussed. The LCE alkyl-CL displayed wider phase range, higher cross-link density noticeable compared other elastomers.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, first series of liquid crystal polymers (PF) synthesised by hydrosilylation monomer containing furan group (MA), cholesterol (MB), D (+)-camphoric acid (MC) and cyano-group (MD), catalysed platinum catalyst. Another (EF) is the Dies-Alder reaction former cross-linker bismaleimide group. The results Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) proton nuclear magnetic resonance(1H NMR) showed successful preparation various monomers as well polymers. thermal properties two were characterised differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). We observed dramatic colour changes Grand-jean textures using polarised optical macroscope (POM). POM selective reflection that both are cholesteric crystals. In latter series, crosslinking Diels-Alder can make better oriented, which maintain their wonderful (LC) texture reflection, at same time, it has a certain regulation effect on appearance blue texture.
