The calixarene-based ligand—4-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene has the capacity of coordinating with various metal cations either individually by itself or together carboxylate/thiol-containing coligands. Interestingly, different types cations, counterions and variable solvents not only generated diverse coordinated cages special morphology topology, but also provided a tool in controlling their porosities, hierarchical architectures, physiochemical properties. Particularly, those porous structures, properly sized cage/cavity-like spaces, as well selected active elemental components greatly promoted applications to electrocatalytic reactions such hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reaction reduction reaction. In this chapter, we summarized discussed preparation electrocatalysis, academic industrial concerns suggestions future researches.

Metal-directed interfacial self-assembly of well-defined coordination polymer (CP) ultrathin films can control the metal complex arrangement and distribution at molecular level, providing a convenient route for design fabrication novel opto-electrical devices heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we report assembly two series CP multilayers with transition-metal ions Fe2+, Co2+, Zn2+ Tb3+ as connectors tripodal terpyridyl ligands 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(1-(4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl)benzyl)pyridin-1-ium) (TerPyTa) 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(1-(4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl)benzyl)pyridin-1-ium) (TerPyBen) linkers air-water interface. The as-prepared Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) display strong luminescence, emission wavelength relative intensity dependent on both linkers; among them, Zn-TerPyTa Zn-TerPyBen CPs give off strongest luminescent centered about 370 nm an lifetime approximately 0.2-0.3 ns. Tb-TerPyTa 490, 546, 586, 622 nm, attributed to 5D4 7F3-6 electron transitions typical ions. Finally, these LB act efficient photocatalysts CO2 reduction selectively produce CO. catalytic efficiency be optimized by adjusting experimental conditions (light sensitizer, donor, water content) composition (metal ion ligand) excellent yield up 248.1 mmol g-1. In particular, it is revealed that, under same conditions, Fe-TerPyTa film nearly 2 3 orders magnitude higher than that other metalated complexes investigated in homogeneous system. UV-vis spectroscopy cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrated dual active sites Fe-terpyridine TerPyTa units contribute enhanced activity. This work provides effective method introduce earth-abundant into construct noble-metal-free reduction.
