Bio-based phosphorus flame retardants offer significant promise in enhancing the retardancy of bioplastics without compromising their environmental friendliness. In this study, a bio-based phosphorus-based retardant (PFR) synthesized from epoxidized soybean oil polyol (PESO) was used to enhance flame-retardant properties poly(lactic acid) (PLA), aiming establish correlation between content and fire behavior PLA composites. Notably, study determined that critical value for improving rating NR V-0 as low 0.1 wt % composites, with limited oxygen index (LOI) increasing 21.0% 25.2%. Meanwhile, introduction PESO high contents decreased peak heat release rate (PHRR) total (THR) by 5.33% 9.66%, respectively. Nevertheless, complete replacement epoxy group ring-opening, loses its plasticizing effect, making it challenging elongation at break PLA. Finally, mechanism PLA/PESO composites comprehensively analyzed. It found also related contents; not favorable char forming condensed phase but promoting melt dripping formation PO•, PO2•, HPO• which could trap radicals gas phase. This provides valuable insights into designing PFRs renewable resources
