Interlayered thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes have shown the potential to boost nanofiltration performance for water treatment applications including removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs). However, effects substrates been overlooked when exploiting and evaluating efficacy certain kinds interlayers in tailoring membrane performance. Herein, a series TFN were synthesized on different porous with identical metal-organic framework nanosheets. It was revealed that interlayer introduction could narrow but not fully eliminate difference properties among polyamide layers formed substrates, variation prominent distinct aspects. For small pore sizes exerting severe transport hindrance, introduced mainly enhanced permeance by affording gutter effect, while it be more effective reducing size improving interfacial polymerization platform avoiding PA defects using large-pore-size substrate. By matching selected well, superior obtained simultaneously higher OMP rejections compared three commercial membranes. This study helps us objectively understand efficacies attain breakthroughs efficient treatment.
