Abstract Central olfactory pathways (i.e., projection axons of the mitral and tufted cells), especially striae, lack common terminology. This is due to their high degree intra‐ interindividual variability, which has been studied in detail over past century by Beccari, Mutel, Klass, Erhart, more recently, Duque Parra et al. These variations led some confusion about number anatomical arrangement. Recent advances fiber tractography have enabled precise vivo visualization human striae study projections. However, these studies require algorithms be set up according presumed anatomy analyzed fibers. A definition therefore needed, not only allow a better analysis results but also ensure quality data obtained. By studying various published works on central from first systematic description Soemmerring present, I traced different discussions tracts summarized them here. review adopts approach addressing each stria individually tracing historical background what was known it past, compared current knowledge. The chronological organized used provides understanding essential structures system.
