Challenging the deglobalization narrative: Global flows have remained resilient through successive shocks

Abstract We challenge the popular narrative that world has entered a period of deglobalization, arguing deglobalization is still risk rather than current reality. Drawing upon DHL Global Connectedness Index, we show international flows have not decreased relative to domestic activity, there an ongoing shift from global regional business, and geopolitically driven shifts in primarily involve countries at center present conflicts. propose policy research implications, warning misperceptions could themselves contribute costly reductions openness.

Regional resilience during a trade war: The role of global connections and local networks

Economic sanctions can adversely affect target countries. We study how regions withstand these amid the US-China trade war. Adopting a geographic relational perspective, we posit that regional resilience hinges on global connections and local networks. Analyzing nightlight data, find is closely tied to nature of connections: cities prioritizing high-value-adding exports perform better, while those reliant foreign firms for focused processing are more vulnerable. Furthermore, with economic development zones exhibit greater war, underscoring importance networks within in mitigating adverse effects.
