Online teaching accelerated during COVID-19-associated lockdowns. At that time, it was assumed university students wanted to revert in-person sessions at the earliest opportunity. However, when were re-introduced, student attendance not as high expected. Therefore, we examined students’ preferences of learning modes. Students (n = 968) from different UK universities, degree cohorts, study levels and biological sexes given four learning-mode options: Face-to-face for lectures tutorials (in-person), Live online (Online-synchronous), Pre-recorded live (Online-mixed-asynchronous-synchronous), face-to-face (Blended: online-asynchronous). ranked these options per their preference via an anonymous survey. Data analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics 28. Results showed most frequently selected 1 st last choices In-person Online-synchronous modes, respectively. For majority, above same across sex, but choice either or Blended. Proportion selecting mode (52.2%) almost equal combined proportions those other modes (47.5%). Amongst least preferred by Language Education Bioscience Sports & Exercise Science students. The latter cohort also more than cohorts. Blended Education, Computer Psychology less Pharmacy students, compared Ordinal regression revealed Online-mixed-asynchronous-synchronous Undergraduates Online-mixed- asynchronous-synchronous postgraduates. Preference differences between insignificant. Thus, identified propose discipline level can predict/influence preferences.

This study arises from the growing need to train professionals capable of confronting and analyzing overabundance information in an increasingly complex world, where critical thinking is seen as indispensable skill for informed decision making problem solving. To this end, a systematic narrative review methodology was applied scientific literature, compiling data various international databases. The results reveal that physiological factors (memory, attention, nutrition physical activity), psychological (cognitive biases, fear ambiguity, metacognition), sociocultural (diversity, inequality, cultural norms), technological (digitalization, use AI, digital literacy), educational (active pedagogical strategies collaborative work) play determining role development higher education. discussion emphasizes interaction between these underscores holistic approaches strengthen both cognitive competencies emotional well-being. In conclusion, we recommend designing comprehensive training interventions consider identified factors, promoting inclusive reflective environments, aimed at developing critical, autonomous graduates facing contemporary challenges.
