Scour funnels formed before bottom orifices are of vital importance regarding intaking water with low-concentration and small-sized sediment to protect the turbine. Via flume experiments, this work investigates effect a bottom-mounted cuboid pile on formation scour funnel upstream orifice. A phenomenon we call as “reverse collapse” is observed for first time, which causes rapid increase in depth Instantaneous velocity measurements show that turbulence kinetic energy near significantly higher compared case without or cylinder under same waterhead condition, indicating large-scale vortex motions enhanced due use pile. The equilibrium orifice found be increased by much 124.6% when exists condition. process highly accelerated exists, it time required reach dramatically reduced 97.2%–99.7%. formula was established calculate depth. findings provide guidance future optimization form placement structures an efficiently achieve larger-sized funnel.

Local scouring around a pier group is more complex than the one single pier. This study used numerical simulations to investigate influence of coherent structures and their interactions on development scour hole group. The obtained results are validated with previous experimental findings. revealed that, in addition horseshoe vortex (HSV), other secondary vortices present inside hole. between them significantly changed size coherence HSV. independent at left right piers led differences depth those piers. instantaneous velocity histograms bimodal aperiodic oscillations lateral movement detached legs HSV was found be reasons for expansion also extracted using Lagrangian method called (LCSs). LCSs shear layers formed upstream They presence anchor-like within identified new mechanisms contributing formation holes groups.

Accurate prediction of scour depth is essential for the safety bridge. The downflow upstream pier plays a significant role in hole formation. present study used Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) to derive an expression estimate force exerted by on sediment bed. LCSs extracted trapping region pier, which trapped fluid, was then converted into downflow. expressions derived this Letter can be improve efficiency equations.

As crucial water conservancy projects, ship locks play a key role in flood control, shipping, resource allocation, and promoting regional economic development, making them an indispensable part of the modern transportation system. Utilizing satellite remote sensing for lock extraction can significantly reduce manual workload costs, assist daily dynamic maintenance hubs, provide more comprehensive data support construction management transport infrastructure. In this context, paper proposes new method object extraction. Leveraging fuzzy theory prior knowledge locks, objects is achieved from Gaofen-1 (GF-1) high-resolution images. The experimental results demonstrate that proposed algorithm effectively extract small images, achieving average accuracy 80.9% study area.
