Mongolia is a globally crucial region that has been suffering from land desertification. However, current understanding on Mongolia’s desertification limited, constraining the control and sustainable development in even other parts of world. This paper studied spatiotemporal patterns, driving factors, mitigation strategies, research methods through an extensive review literature. Results showed that: (i) remote sensing monitoring subject to relatively low spatial resolution considerable time delay, thus high-resolution timely data are needed perform more precise study; (ii) contribution impacting factors not quantitatively assessed, decoupling analysis desirable quantify different regions Mongolia; (iii) existing prevention measures should be strengthened future. In particular, relationship between grassland changes husbandry needs considered during measures; (iv) multi-method study (particularly interdisciplinary approaches) model enhanced facilitate in-depth Mongolia. provides useful reference for

Turing instabilities of reaction-diffusion systems can only arise if the diffusivities chemical species are sufficiently different. This threshold is unphysical in most with $N=2$ diffusing species, forcing experimental realizations instability to rely on fluctuations or additional nondiffusing species. Here, we ask whether this diffusive lowers for $N>2$ allow ``true'' instabilities. Inspired by May's analysis stability random ecological communities, analyze probability distribution defined matrices describing linearized dynamics near a homogeneous fixed point. In numerically tractable cases $N\ensuremath{\leqslant}6$, find that becomes more likely be smaller and physical as $N$ increases, these many-species cannot described reduced models fewer

Self-organized spatial patterns are ubiquitous in ecological systems and allow populations to adopt non-trivial distributions starting from disordered configurations. These form due diverse nonlinear interactions among organisms between their environment, lead the emergence of new (eco)system-level properties unique self-organized systems. Such pattern consequences include higher resilience resistance environmental changes, abrupt ecosystem collapse, hysteresis loops, reversal competitive exclusion. Here, we review exhibiting patterns. We establish two broad categories depending on whether self-organizing process is primarily driven by density-dependent demographic rates or movement. Using this organization, examine a wide range observational scales, microbial colonies whole ecosystems, discuss mechanisms hypothesized underlie observed system-level consequences. For each example, both empirical evidence existing theoretical frameworks developed identify causes patterning. Finally, trace qualitative similarities across propose possible ways developing more quantitative understanding how self-organization operates scales ecology.

Abstract This study investigates the effects of vegetation patch patterns on morphological evolution alluvial river channels at reach‐scale. For this, a new two‐dimensional numerical biomorphodynamic model has been developed using Telemac‐Mascaret system. Considering newest development in topic, bedload transport are included by extending Einstein's parameters for sediment formula. The was subsequently validated published laboratory experiments reproducing alternate bar dynamics with different establishment scenarios. then used to influence channel considering two most observed ones: (a) filled pattern plants well distributed within patch, and (b) stripe established only along edges. 14 scenarios were simulated total, including sensitivity analyses coefficients characteristics. results indicate that responses an system consist widening, steeper slope reduced water depth, increased rates. similar but weaker. also show pattern, bars tend migrate toward centerline forming center bars. Besides, scroll downstream shorter, corresponding less visible chute channels, compared pattern. Despite much coverage, decreases elongation rates way

One of the greatest challenges to mankind is understanding underlying principles climate change. Over last years, role forests in change has received increased attention. This due observation that not only atmosphere a principal impact on vegetation growth but also contributing local variations weather resulting diverse microclimates. The interconnection plant ecosystems and described studied as ecoclimates. In this work we take steps towards simulating ecoclimates by modeling feedback loops between vegetation, soil, atmosphere. contrast existing methods describe at global scale, our model aims climate. Specifically, tree interactively response gradients water, temperature light. As result, are able capture range ecoclimate phenomena have been modeled before, including geomorphic controls, forest edge effects, Foehn effect spatial patterning. To validate plausibility method conduct comparative analysis studies from ecology climatology. Consequently, advances state-of-the-art generating highly realistic outdoor landscapes vegetation.
