Abstract Positive interactions are sensitive to human activities, necessitating synthetic approaches elucidate broad patterns and predict future changes if these altered or lost. General understanding of freshwater positive has been far outpaced by knowledge important relationships in terrestrial marine ecosystems. We conducted a global meta‐analysis evaluate the magnitude across habitats. In 340 studies, we found substantial effects, with facilitators increasing beneficiaries by, on average, 81% all taxa response variables. Mollusks particular were commonly studied as both beneficiaries. Amphibians one group benefiting most from interactions, yet few studies investigated amphibians. Invasive had stronger effects than non‐invasive facilitators. compared between high‐ low‐stress conditions no difference benefit subset that manipulated stressors. Future areas research include understudied beneficiaries, stress gradient hypothesis, space time influence declining whose elimination would jeopardise fragile interaction networks. Freshwater occur among wide range taxa, populations, communities ecosystem processes deserve further exploration.

Abstract The relationship between biodiversity and biomass has been a long standing debate in ecology. Soil are essential drivers of ecosystem functions. However, unlike plant communities, little is known about how the diversity soil microbial communities interlinked across globally distributed biomes, variations this influence function. To fill knowledge gap, we conducted field survey global with contrasting vegetation climate types. We show that carbon (C) content associated to diversity–biomass ratio soils biomes. This provides an integrative index identify those locations on Earth wherein much higher compared vice versa. diversity-to-biomass peaks arid environments low C content, very C-rich cold environments. Our study further advances reductions land use intensification change could cause dramatic shifts diversity-biomass ratio, potential consequences for broad processes.

Abstract In the Anthropocene, increasing pervasive plastic pollution is creating a new environmental compartment, plastisphere. How plastisphere affects microbial communities and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) an issue of global concern. Although this has been studied in aquatic ecosystems, our understanding microbiota soil ecosystems remains poor. Here, we investigated ARGs four types microplastics (MPs) from diverse environments, revealed effects manure, temperature, moisture on them. Our results showed that MPs select for plastisphere, these are involved metabolic pathways, indicating they could drive ecological processes ecosystem. The relationship within bacterial zero-radius operational taxonomic units (zOTUs) was predominantly positive, neutral appeared to dominate community assembly. However, deterministic were more important explaining variance plastispheres. A range potential pathogens detected which enriched compared but varied across types. We further found addition manure elevation temperature all enhance plastispheres, increase with moisture. These suggested plastispheres habitats increased pathogen abundance spatially co-located under change. findings provided insights into ecology microbiome resistome

Plant response to drought stress involves fungi and bacteria that live on in plants the rhizosphere, yet stability of these myco- micro-biomes remains poorly understood. We investigate resistance resilience an agricultural system using both community composition microbial associations. Here we show tests fundamental hypotheses fungi, as compared bacteria, are (i) more resistant but (ii) less resilient when rewetting relieves stress, found robust support at level composition. Results were complex all-correlations co-occurrence networks. In general, disrupts networks based significant positive correlations among between fungi. Surprisingly, functional guilds rhizosphere leaf strengthened by drought, same was seen for involving arbuscular mycorrhizal rhizosphere. also gradient hypothesis because increased relative frequency correlations.

Network analysis has been used for many years in ecological research to analyze organismal associations, example food webs, plant-plant or plant-animal interactions. Although pervasive microplastics (MPs) pollution in terrestrial ecosystems invites increasing concern, impact of MPs on soil microbial community assembly, and ecosystem functions multifunctionality received relatively little attention. Here, we manipulated a mesocosm experiment to investigate how polyethylene (PE MPs; 0, 1%, 5%, w/w) influence plant production, quality, diversity enzymology carbon (C), nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P) cycling, maize–soil continuum. Results showed that PE exerted negligible effect biomass (dry weight). The 5% caused declines the availability water, C P, whereas enhanced pH storage. activity C-cycling enzymes (α/β-1, 4-glucosidase, β-D-cellobiohydrolase) was promoted by 1% MPs, while β-1, 4-glucosidase inhibited MPs. reduced N-cycling (protease urease), increased P-cycling enzyme (alkaline phosphatase). shifted composition, number specialist species, stability networks resistance. altered with concentration decreasing dispersal limitation proportion (from 13.66 9.96%). Overall, improved concentration, α/β-1, urease, protease, ammonium-N content were most important predictors multifunctionality. These results underscore can alter assembly multifunctionality, thus development implement scalable solutions controlling become increasingly imperative sustainable agricultural production.

Metabolic cross-feeding plays vital roles in promoting ecological diversity. While some microbes depend on exchanges of essential nutrients for growth, the forces driving extensive needed to support coexistence free-living are poorly understood. Here we characterize bacterial physiology under self-acidification and establish that excretion key metabolites following growth arrest provides a collaborative, inter-species mechanism stress resistance. This collaboration occurs not only between species isolated from same community, but also unrelated with complementary (glycolytic vs. gluconeogenic) modes metabolism. Cultures such communities progress through distinct phases growth-dilution cycles, comprising exponential acidification-triggered arrest, collaborative deacidification, recovery, each phase involving different combinations physiological states individual species. Our findings challenge steady-state view ecosystems commonly portrayed models, offering an alternative dynamical based advantages phases.
