Most sociophysics opinion dynamics simulations assume that contacts between agents lead to greater similarity of opinions, and there is a tendency for having similar opinions group together. These mechanisms result, in many types models, significant polarization, understood as separation groups conflicting opinions. The addition inflexible (zealots) or mechanisms, which drive even further apart, only exacerbates these polarizing processes. Using universal mathematical framework, formulated the language utility functions, we present novel simulation results. They combine tendencies with potentially favoring diverse, non-polarized environments. are aimed at answering following question: How can systems exist stable configurations? framework enables easy introduction, study, effects external “pro-diversity”, its contribution function. Specific examples presented this paper include an extension classic square geometry Ising-like model, modify their dynamic scale-free network system two different promoting local diversity, where structure connecting while keeping stable. Despite differences they show fundamental similarities results terms existence low temperature, stable, locally globally diverse states, i.e., states differing remain closely linked. Social polarization is a growing concern worldwide, as it strains social relations, erodes trust in institutions, and thus hurts democratic societies. Polarization has been traditionally studied binary conflicts where two groups support opposite ideas. However, many systems, such multi-party democracies, political involve multiple dissenting factions. Despite the prevalence of multipolar there still lack suitable analytical tools to study their patterns. In this work, we introduce new metrics for multidimensional scenarios develop methodology that extracts ideological structure contexts from networks. We propose trace covariance matrix (the total variation) opinion distribution measure global polarization, its eigendecomposition identify directions maximum polarization. Instead using pre-conceived space (conservative vs progressive, liberal authoritarian, etc.), our framework reveals natural axes system. apply quadripolar pentapolar real-world processes, finding non-trivial structures with clear connections underlying context. Our opens avenues understanding multilateral tensions facing challenges unified way.

Abstract Polarization poses a critical threat to the stability of nations around world, as it impacts climate change, populism, democracy, and global health. This perspective examines conceptual understanding, measurement challenges, potential interventions for polarization. Our analysis highlights distinction interactions between individual collective levels polarization, conceptually, methodologically, in terms interventions. We conclude by pointing out future directions understanding polarization highlighting interrelations other social phenomena.

A ubiquitous type of collective behavior and decision-making is the coordinated motion bird flocks, fish schools, human crowds. Collective decisions to move in same direction, turn right or left, split into subgroups arise a self-organized fashion from local interactions between individuals without central plans designated leaders. Strikingly similar phenomena consensus (collective motion), clustering (subgroup formation), bipolarization (splitting extreme groups) are also observed opinion formation. As we developed models crowd dynamics analyzed networks, found ourselves going down path as social networks. In this article, draw out parallels crowds We show that have mathematical form generate analogous multiagent simulations. suggest they can be unified by common dynamics, which may extended other psychological collectives. Abstract Though ideological differences have long been a ubiquitous feature of American politics, the rise online news and social media has exacerbated divisions between groups. While existing research documented how political preferences manifest online, relatively few studies considered whether extend to discussions foreign policy. We examine this question by analyzing nearly 2 million tweets about war in Ukraine posted Americans during opening stages Russian invasion. first categorize each tweet according user’s leanings estimated network accounts they follow. Then, we apply natural language processing model specifically designed for short texts classify into clusters that hand code substantive topics. find topic distributions conservative, moderate, liberal users are substantively statistically different. further conservatives more likely spread some form misinformation liberals express support Ukraine. Our paper concludes with discussion implications our findings conduct U.S.

ABSTRACT Social exclusion threatens psychological needs satisfaction, increases anger, and can contribute to group polarization. Research has shown that modernization changed people’s values. Yet, it remains unknown whether also ideological polarization, namely, the variability of values within population. The paper investigates this question by analysing data from World Value Survey about multiple countries sampled over waves (339 wave-countries). Once was operationalised as per capita gross domestic product, analyses reveal poor display greater polarization in domain economics, gender equality and immigration. This fits with idea are predisposed to because they transitioning towards modernity. Still, domains like abortion divorce, emerged be rich here population is divided between conservative liberal positions, while most people converge on views. These observations clarify multifaceted implications highlight its influence upon political polarization.
