Abstract Auditory perception can benefit from stimuli in non-auditory sensory modalities, as for example lip-reading. Compared with such visual influences, tactile influences are still poorly understood. It has been shown that single pulses enhance the of auditory depending on their relative timing, but whether and how brief enhancements be stretched time more sustained, phase-specific periodic stimulation is unclear. To address this question, we presented fluctuated coherently continuously at 4Hz an noise (either in-phase or anti-phase) assessed its effect cortical processing signal embedded noise. Scalp-electroencephalography recordings revealed enhancing responses phase-locked to a suppressive anti-phase evoked by signal. Although these effects appeared follow well-known principles multisensory integration discrete audio-tactile events, they were not accompanied corresponding behavioral measures perception. Our results indicate continuous acoustically-induced fluctuations mask ongoing They further suggest sustained insufficient inducing bottom-up benefits.

Syllables are an essential building block of speech. We recently showed that tactile stimuli linked to the perceptual centers syllables in continuous speech can improve comprehension. The rate lies theta frequency range, between 4 and 8 Hz, behavioral effect appears multisensory integration this band. Because neural activity may be oscillatory, we hypothesized a also occur not only while but after has been evoked or entrained through vibrotactile pulses. Here, show audiotactile regarding perception single syllables, both on level, is consistent with hypothesis. first stimulated participants series pulses then presented them syllable background noise. that, at delay 200 msec last pulse, still occurred band discrimination was enhanced. Moreover, dependence as well audio signal respect pulse damped oscillation. In addition, gain correlated score. Our results therefore evidence role provide these effects involve oscillatory persists stimulation.

Infant hypersensitivity affects daily challenges and parental stress. Although the crucial role of tactile sensation in infants' brain function has been highlighted, hypersensitive infants their families lack support. Electroencephalography may be useful for understanding traits. We investigated relationship between infant perceptual stress, somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP), magnitude-squared coherence (MSC) general population.

ABSTRACT Background Plasticity from auditory experience shapes the brain’s encoding and perception of sound. Though prior research demonstrates that neural entrainment (i.e., brain-to-acoustic synchronization) aids speech perception, how long- short-term plasticity influence to concurrent has not been investigated. Here, we explored mechanisms interplay between short- long-term neuroplasticity for rapid perceptual learning sounds in young, normal-hearing musicians nonmusicians. Method Participants learned identify double-vowel mixtures during ∼45 min training sessions with high-density EEG recordings. We examined degree which brain responses entrained speech-stimulus train (∼9 Hz) investigate whether behavioral decision predicted task performance. Source directed functional connectivity analyses probed behavior was driven by group differences auditory-motor coupling. Results Both nonmusicians showed accuracy training. Interestingly, listeners’ strength target identification performance; stronger synchronization observed preceding incorrect compared correct trial responses. also found stark hemispheric biases coupling entrainment, greater right left hemisphere (R>L) but (R=L). Conclusions Our findings confirm neuroacoustic processing musicians. Stronger stimulus trains supports notion alpha-band (∼10 arousal/suppression activity is an important modulator trial-by-trial success processing.

The acoustic speech signal cannot be clearly divided into individual words and rather resembles a continuous stream of sounds. Nevertheless, there are temporal regularities that may used in perception. duration language elements such as phonemes, syllables, phrases is also reflected the neural response patterns during Impairments functions often accompanied by changes these patterns. Despite findings, it not clear whether causal relationship between quality This article introduces relevant components signal, describes neuronal to stimuli healthy brain shows which neurophysiological associated with dysfunction.
