Abstract Complex neural systems can display structured emergent dynamics. Capturing this structure remains a significant scientific challenge. Using information theory, we apply Dynamical Independence (DI) to uncover the dynamical in minimal 5-node biophysical model, shaped by interplay of two key aspects brain organisation: integration and segregation. In our study, functional within model is modulated global coupling parameter, while segregation influenced adding noise, which counteracts coupling. DI defines dimensionally-reduced macroscopic variable (e.g., coarse-graining) as extent that it behaves an independent process, distinct from micro-level We measure dependence (a departure independence) for variables across spatial scales. How is conscious experience related to material brain processes? A variety of theories aiming answer this age-old question have emerged from the recent surge in consciousness research, and some are now hotly debated. Although most researchers so far focused on development validation their preferred theory relative isolation, article, written by a group scientists representing different theories, takes an alternative approach. Noting that various often try explain aspects or mechanistic levels consciousness, we argue do not necessarily contradict each other. Instead, several them may converge fundamental neuronal mechanisms be partly compatible complementary, multiple can simultaneously contribute our understanding. Here, consider unifying, integration-oriented approaches been largely neglected, seeking combine valuable elements theories.

In 1998, Jones suggested a classification of thalamocortical projections into core and matrix divisions (Jones, 1998). this classification, are specific, topographical, innervate middle cortical layers, serve to transmit specific information the cortex for further analysis; projections, in contrast, diffuse, much less topographic, upper especially Layer 1, more global, modulatory function, such as affecting levels arousal. This has proven influential studies relationships. Whereas it may be case that clear subset connections fit motif, since they we argue there is no evidence any single class encompasses remainder claimed matrix. Instead, great morphological variation made by fitting neither nor classification. We thus conclude core/matrix should abandoned, because its application not helpful providing insights interactions can even misleading. As one example latter, recent suggestions indicate equivalent first-order thalamic relays (i.e., those relay subcortical cortex) higher-order from area another), but available does support relationship. All points need replace grouping with complete projections.

Disentangling how cognitive functions emerge from the interplay of brain dynamics and network architecture is among major challenges that neuroscientists face. Pharmacological pathological perturbations consciousness provide a lens to investigate these complex challenges. Here, we review recent advances about brain's functional organisation have been driven by common denominator: decomposing function into fundamental constituents time, space, information. Whereas unconsciousness increases structure-function coupling across scales, psychedelics may decouple structure. Convergent effects also emerge: anaesthetics, psychedelics, disorders can exhibit similar reconfigurations unimodal-transmodal axis. Decomposition approaches reveal potential translate discoveries species, with computational modelling providing path towards mechanistic integration.

Background: Treating psychiatric illnesses or influencing mental states with neurofeedback is challenging, likely due to the limited spatial specificity of EEG and complications arising from inadequate signal-to-noise ratio reduction single-trial EEG. Objective: This pilot study aimed investigate feasibility employing a binaural pulse mode-modulation (BPM) device reduce anxiety by self-regulation. We desired determine whether could be significantly reduced regulated using BPM-type systems. Methods: Sixty adult participants were examined self-reported tests (COVID Stress Scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7, Beck Depression Inventory-II), which completed before treatment, after four weeks, 12 weeks post-treatment. BPM produced two frequencies combined create through differential auditory tone presentations. The participant calibrated suitable target for optimal treatment efficacy. Each adjusted enhance emotional intensity felt when envisioning an experience comparable significance while performing cognitive task concurrently listening music. “treatment” relied on individual’s regulation pulses obtain state. training concentrated particular facets their psychological challenges tone, adjusting knob until sound amplified intended Another was turned intensify state associated distress reduction. Results: On measures, group better than sham (control) groups (p < 0.01). These findings indicate that over four-week intervention period, similarly effective. GAD-7, significant difference time noted at end experimental group, average GAD-7 score being lower Conclusions: seems induce short-term alteration in levels during therapy. study’s limitations are examined, recommendations future research provided.

There appears to be a fundamental difference between the two ways of how an object becomes perceptually experienced. We generalised same (with identical parameters) more complex task – visual rivalry found thalamic-mediated mechanism determined dominance. Abstract Research into the role of thalamocortical circuits in anesthesia-induced unconsciousness is difficult due to anatomical and functional complexity. Prior neuroimaging studies have examined either thalamus as a whole or focused on specific subregions, overlooking distinct neuronal subtypes like core matrix cells. We conducted study heathy volunteers magnetic resonance imaging during conscious baseline, deep sedation, recovery. advanced gradient mapping technique delineate geometry circuits, within framework unimodal-transmodal axis cortex. observed significant shift this unconsciousness, marked by dominance unimodal over transmodal geometry.
