Nonetheless, there been little consideration whether these events genuinely boost attention received by source. To address this gap, we analyze content timelines from over 1000 European outlets 2018 2023 Facebook and YouTube, employing a Bayesian structural time series model evaluate posts. Our results show that most do not significantly increase engagement rarely lead sustained growth. We identify two primary types effects corresponding different mechanisms collective response. A 'loaded-type' manifests after growth phase, representing final burst, followed decline attention. 'sudden-type' virality, with emerging unexpectedly, reactivates response process. Moreover, quick fade faster, while slower processes more persistent These findings highlight transient nature underscore importance consistent, steady attention-building strategies establish solid connection user base rather than relying sudden visibility spikes.

How do independent media affect regime support in an autocracy? We carry out two field experiments Russia by promoting the country's only online TV channel to a randomized sample of cities and individuals before 2016 parliamentary elections. In both experiments, we find that foster polarization, increasing turnout progovernment votes among supporters, reducing it for nonsupporters. The effect, however, holds voters who rely on news from social media; consumers traditional media, our treatment uniformly decreases support. Our results highlight how can mediate effect autocracies.
