Consumption, relative deprivation and mental health: evidence from hedonic consumption

Introduction
In
recent
years,
relative
deprivation
related
to
consumption
has
sparked
intense
debate,
particularly
as
the
COVID-19
pandemic
caused
incalculable
economic
losses
worldwide.
However,
relationship
between
and
mental
health
remains
largely
unexplored.
This
study
investigates
how
both
vertical
(household-level)
horizontal
(household-to-household)
affect
health,
with
a
focus
on
hedonic
consumption,
identifies
underlying
channels
moderating
factors.
Methods
We
analyze
data
from
China
Family
Panel
Studies
(CFPS)
covering
88,144
observations
2010
2018.
Hedonic
is
measured
through
expenditure
items
such
jewelry,
antiques,
entertainment,
while
inequality
assessed
using
Kakwani
index.
Mental
evaluated
CES-D
Kessler
6
scales.
Ordinary
least
squares
(OLS)
two-stage
(2SLS)
methods
are
employed.
Results
Our
findings
show
that
reductions
in
negatively
impact
involuntary
sudden
declines
resulting
more
pronounced
deterioration.
Furthermore,
greater
exacerbates
issues,
perceived
unfair
treatment
amplifies
this
effect.
Additionally,
self-perception
trust
levels
identified
key
which
these
effects.
