Abstract Stayers are an important component of the internal migration system, yet despite their numerical significance, they often treated as ancillary to movers in literature. As a result, there is conflict between mobility‐centric view immobility undesirable and developing narratives which recognise staying active consciously made decision. We therefore need rethink conceptually empirically shed light on numerically dominant population that has largely been neglected. Using Australia case study, this paper examines whether being stayer positive or negative association with life satisfaction, relationship varies by (1) preference for leaving, (2) cities regional areas, (3) before during onset pandemic. By first reconceptualising process distinguishing voluntary involuntary stayers, satisfaction outcomes examined using four preference‐behaviour types: desired , undesired mover . Drawing nationally representative survey data regression modelling, results reveal differences individuals expressing leaving. Findings highlight while stayers generally declined, was associated significantly greater loss compared The magnitude areas those surveyed These illuminate varied characteristics within Australian demonstrate importance acknowledging theorisations (im)mobility emphasise value adopting immobility‐focused perspective migration.

During the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, anecdotal evidence a "rural revival" emerged mirroring "urban exodus" hypothesis. Currently, we know that internal migration to rural areas increased in some countries during 2020, although not with intensity speculated by media. However, little is known about attributes attracting migrants, demographic composition inflows, and if counterurbanisation movements persisted over 2021. Drawing on administrative population register data, analysed main types pulling migrants Spain their characteristics, namely age, sex place birth 2020 using period 2016-2019 as benchmark. Our results show in-migration close cities high prevalence second homes while out-migration declined. Exceptionally inflows 2021, but outflows converged figures observed prior pandemic. Inflows comprised across wide age spectrum, from young adults families retired individuals. These flows also foreign-born, particularly populations range Latin American countries.

Abstract Existing empirical work has focused on assessing the effectiveness of nonpharmaceutical interventions human mobility to contain spread COVID‐19. Less is known about ways in which COVID‐19 pandemic reshaped spatial patterns population movement within countries. Anecdotal evidence an urban exodus from large cities rural areas emerged during early phases across western societies. Yet, these claims have not been empirically assessed. Abstract After the outbreak of COVID‐19 pandemic, media abounded with stories people ‘fleeing city‐centres’ and ‘finding refuge in countryside’. A recurrent argument is that shift towards remote work has prompted individuals to reconsider their living situation envisage possibility relocating further away from workplace. The aim this study examine patterns out‐migration Stockholm inner city during as well characteristics out‐migrants. We use Swedish register data compare trends for first year pandemic (2020) 5 years preceding it (2015–2019). Our shows that, similar other large cities across world, moved out a higher degree 2020 than pandemic. majority movers relocated suburbs, which experienced substantial increase inflows city. Yet number smaller municipalities, including traditional tourist destinations, also received more residents 2020. Despite anecdotal evidence of a COVID-19 induced decline in the intensity interstate migration Australia, population-level is limited. The recent release 2020 wave Household, Income and Labour Dynamics Australia (HILDA) Survey provides unique opportunity to robustly assess effect pandemic on level, direction, determinants, reasons for Australia. By applying series regression models individual-level longitudinal microdata, measuring at range spatial scales, this paper shows that has somewhat accelerated long-term internal migration-particularly residential mobility, short-distance migration, due employment involuntary reasons. socio-demographic determinants have remained broadly stable, despite slight increase deterring duration residence reduction impact education. Finally, we show net gains regional areas underpinned by decrease outflows. Juxtaposing these results with aggregate-level statistics from Australian Bureau Statistics 2021, conclude date been minimal likely be short-lived. Abstract Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, speculations on decline of major cities have surged, with studies noting temporary population decreases across various worldwide. However, research scarcely addresses pandemic’s enduring influence perceptions city living. Rather than exploring mid- to long-term impacts, current literature focuses mainly comparing changes in residential preferences during and before pandemic. To fill this gap, we conducted a randomized conjoint experiment scrutinize altered attitudes toward residing Tokyo Metropolis due Scenarios encompassed reminders potential pandemic re-occurrence teleworking options. Despite variations depending scenarios socio-demographic characteristics survey participants, overall, results show that surge remote working did not diminish allure Tokyo, implying low probability an urban decline. In the past 10 years or so, there have been growing concerns in Japan that migration trends, such as large in-migration to Tokyo metropolitan area (TMA) at national scale and movements from suburbs centres scale, widened core-periphery disparities each under population decline. However, COVID-19 pandemic led unexpected changes these patterns, a weakened concentration TMA. This study aims examine internal trends 2012, on axes of centre-suburbs areas, patterns caused by 2020. First, we prepared intermunicipal origin-destination tables estimating suppressed flows 2012-2020 using iterative proportional fitting technique, then calculated net efficiency indices based seven types: centre TMA, major other areas nonmetropolitan areas. The results indicate 2020 TMA drastically dropped lowest level during period, contrasting with an upward trend 2012-2019. strongly affected from/to within much gain centre, but impact efficiencies among was minimal. However, their circumstances benefitted significantly status, relatively young age independent visa status. The attention participants' lives before also enabled insight into relationality im/mobility: even immobilised many people, it could mobilise reconfigure opportunity.
