Abstract
Feelings
and
questions
of
belonging
are
central
to
daily
life.
Highlighting
this
centrality,
research
theory
in
higher
education
have
offered
robust
definitions
frameworks
for
understanding
what
it
means
belong,
how
shapes
meaningful
life
outcomes,
foster
it.
This
chapter
offers
an
interdisciplinary
structure
putting
these
perspectives
conversation.
To
do
this,
I
first
briefly
review
weave
discussion
about
some
common
on
belonging.
Then,
drawing
from
a
place‐belongingness
politics
framework—which
describes
is
both
intimate
feeling
bounded
by
intersecting
social
forces
that
serve
include
exclude
various
realities—I
highlight
key
factors
(autobiographical,
relational,
cultural,
economic,
legal,
elective)
constitute
offer
concrete
examples

each
factor

Belonging
is
a
complex
relational
concept.
It
has
been
shown
to
be
processual,
emergent,
and
dynamic.
And
yet
this
relationality,
complexity,
sits
in
tension
with
increasingly
voluble
calls
measure,
manage
maintain
students'
sense
of
belonging

ostensibly
fixed
space
higher
education.
This
article
reports
on
research
that
invited
students
not
only
define
how
they
experience
belonging,
but
also
surface
belonging's
relationality:
it
entangled
material
spaces
artefacts
enacted
through
evolving
behaviours
communities.
Our
data
depict
modulations
which
disrupt
dominant
discourses
simplicity,
stability
uniformity.
Engaging
the
generative
concept
social
topologies,
we
offer
rethinking
both
as
relational.
These
findings
enable
us
consider
more
nuanced
perspectives
about
understood
enacted,
surfacing
tapestries
non-belonging
experiences
within
education,
well
increasing
departure
from
coherent
delineated
conception
'the
university'.

consumption
