Abstract Background The International Partnership for Dogs, together with a rotating national host organisation, holds approximately biennial meetings called the Dog Health Workshop (IDHW). These workshops bring broad range of stakeholders in dog health and welfare, including scientists veterinary practitioners, to improve international sharing information resources, provide forum ongoing collaboration, identify agree on specific needs actions canine welfare. presentation 5th was hosted by Finnish Kennel Club Helsinki, Finland, June 2024. workshop structured around four key issues facing those working health: ‘Supply Demand’, ‘Breeding Well-Being’, ‘Big Data’, ‘Does Colour Matter? Defining Breed vs. Variety’. provided an opportunity participants meet face-to-face after five-year hiatus due COVID-19, 10 th anniversary Dogs. Among 106 decision-makers from 16 countries who attended workshop, there agreement several during discussions, such as following scientific evidence genetics health, moving away extreme conformation, using all available tools, crossbreeding, maintain increase genetic variation within breeds. It agreed that these principles should become priorities welfare-minded organisations at levels. Better education puppy buyers, breeders, show judges, other relevant parties recurringly identified priority across themes workshop. Conclusions In summary, agreements IDHW were must comply fully animal welfare legislation, work eliminate conformations dogs diversity subpopulations dogs, recognise support crossbreeding accepted valuable tool modern breeding.

The increasing trend of dog ownership is often linked to its perceived benefits for human physical and mental well-being. However, the psychological practical demands caring a can significantly impact owner's quality life long-term success dog-owner relationship. This study aimed provide comprehensive overview both advantages disadvantages ownership, as by convenience sample Hungarian owners (N = 246), who were assumed be generally satisfied with their dogs. employed quantitative (a Cost/Benefit scale consisting 33 neutrally-phrased statements rated on seven-point scale, from − 3 + 3) qualitative methods (two open-ended questions). Quantitative results showed that short lifespan dogs most negative aspect, while belief brighten lives was positively. On average, positive higher (2.06) than ones (−0.66), supporting prediction social exchange theory in voluntary tend perceive more ownership. Qualitative findings revealed six 'benefit' three 'cost' themes. 61% considered meaningful relationship greatest benefit, frequently mentioning dog's constant presence, love, support.
