Introduction Distress is part of the experiences and care for people with chronic low back pain. However, distress often pathologised individualised; it seen as a problem within individual in pain something to be downplayed, avoided, or fixed. To that end, we situate normal everyday relational experience circulating, affecting, moving in, through, across bodies. Challenging practices may amplify distress, draw on theorisation affect assemblage analyse physiotherapy clinical encounters Methods Adopting critical reflexive ethnographic approach, data from qualitative project involving 15 observations patient-physiotherapist interactions 6 collaborative dialogues between researchers physiotherapists. We foreground conceptualisations distress— what they make (im)possible—to trace embodied formations relationality when caring Results Our findings indicate conceptualisation matters entanglement, particularly how recognised navigated. study highlights both lived an affective relation—that physiotherapist can affected by each other encounters. Discussion Situated at intersection health sociology, sociology emotions, physiotherapy, our offers worked example applying theoretical framework understanding emotionally imbued interactions. Viewing through lens allows recognising life, pain, are emerging, always flux. Such approach recognises clinicians patients distress; other. It demands more humanistic helps move towards reconnecting inseparable practice—emotion reason, body mind, carer cared for.

In this paper, we draw on an example of heuristic inquiry – (Re)imagining becoming a physiotherapist: phenomenological approach to illustrate the role that reflexivity and representation can play in physiotherapy research outcomes meaning they might have for moving profession forward. Qualitative tends acknowledge as route objectivity by making researcher biases overt, yet debate about data (a researcher's decision-making how are represented text) barely feature. This contrasts with qualitative other fields, including health professions, where matters (i.e., knowledge is conveyed) routinely debated contested. Reflexivity, fact, much more than being transparent. Together representation, helps position both voices participants researchers within research. The described paper offers new insights learning be physiotherapist; it challenged assumptions care practice changed first identity practice. These were generated through synergies between argue has opportunity expansive taking commitment seriously.
