Circular bio-based building materials (CBBMs) provide a potential solution to reduce the climate impacts of buildings and offer opportunities transition construction industry circular model. Promoting use these can also gain economic, environmental, social benefits from valorising waste by-products other sectors. Despite their potential, CBBMs have not received sufficient attention globally, adoption is hindered by various barriers. However, it unclear what status is, barriers are, how interact, should be done address them. This study addresses knowledge gaps through systematic using mixed method investigate in developed economies specific case analysis Flanders. The data results show that hemp-based, cork-based, straw-based are most used, while market for very limited. 23 identified selected existing literature ranked based on mean scores, t-test helps identify 13 critical Kendall's W test shows good consensus among two expert groups with without hands-on experience utilising rankings Meanwhile, Mann-Whitney U indicates no statistically significant differences ranks between groups. interview confirm almost all survey deeper insights into adopting materials. Practical policy implications discussed findings inform deliberations promoting CBBMs. may reference scholars practitioners better understand issues impacting decision-making towards industry.

Abstract Buildings and associated stock have a negative environmental impact during construction operation. The transition of the built environment to circular economy (CE) has become widely accepted due growing concerns regarding end life current building stock. This is highlighted as step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals for GHG emissions decarbonisation by 2030 UN, net zero targets 2050 peak bodies such World Green Building Council. To support this, focus on (CB) paramount, especially at level, since circularity with dynamics processes, materials, stakeholders that enable optimising resources while minimizing waste throughout building’s lifecycle. Nevertheless, there an ongoing debate among professionals in architecture, engineering, (AEC) sector implementation CE principles initial design phase buildings. uptake presents challenges, primarily cost complexity process absence immediate economic value, compared traditional approaches. paper critical literature review examines key factors contribute preliminary development framework buildings guide designers circularity.

Abstract The paper illustrates the rationale of an ongoing research aimed at identifying innovative applications for poplar- and hemp-based products in constructive systems, focusing on load-bearing poplar plywood elements hemp blocks panels building envelope. underlying approach extends circular-based perspective from component scale to territorial economic one, adopting a context-wise approach. potential these renewable materials is examined beyond application reversible depict their comprehensive contribution carbon-neutral region by examining links with local management short supply chain. describes agricultural productions, connecting outputs several sector. After addressing environmental benefits, two cultivations produce terms climate change mitigation adaptation, among which carbon uptake, it contextualises within current bio-based solutions sector, exploring possible new existing constructions through circular systems. results discussion outlines sustainable multiscale synergies supported perimeter.
