Toward an intersectional communicology of stigma

Abstract
In
this
article,
I
develop
an
intersectional
communicology
of
stigma
(ICS),
in
which
is
conceptualized
as
a
power-laden,
materially
and
communicatively
constituted
process
devaluing
those
associated
with
negatively
perceived
differences
tied
to
intertwined
systems
oppression
privilege.
From
approach,
does
not
exist
outside
communication,
that
is,
power-laden
language
relationships.
Furthermore,
can
should
be
studied
simultaneously
operating
at
individual,
organizational,
societal
structural
levels.
This
framework
recognizes
the
complex
social
construction
identify
new
paths
for
addressing
contemporary
issues
across
subdisciplines
communication.

Disenfranchising Talk Mediates the Relationship Between Social Determinants of Health and Wellbeing Outcomes for Women of Color Patients with Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune

dismissive
healthcare
provider
(HCP)
interactions
exacerbate
these
disparities
in
outcomes
for

autoimmune
disease.
Guided
by
the
theory
communicative
(dis)enfranchisement,
this
study
assesses
whether
disenfranchising
talk
(DT)
mediates
relationship
between
SDOH
race/ethnicity,
insurance
status,
income,
employment,
education,
sexual
orientation)
including
patient
satisfaction,
overall
well-being,
tangible
social
support
Findings
affirmed
mediating
role
DT,
such
that
Multiethnic-racial
patients
those
less
coverage
lower
household
income
reported
support,
poorer
satisfaction
when
they
experienced
HCP
DT.
We
offer
theoretical
practical
implications.

Within
this
special
issue,
we
turn
our
attention
to
critical
perspectives
within
the
communication
discipline
and
seek
illuminate
implementation
of
methods
across
its
broader
contexts.
While

historically
been
grounded
in
normativity
centering
whiteness,
perspectives,
which
are
characterized
by
communicative
practices
that
attend
systems
power
hierarchy
social
spheres,
have
broadly
integrated
into
meaningfully
shaped
study
contexts
such
as
rhetoric,
intercultural
communication,
performance
studies.
We
argue,
however,
incorporation

underdeveloped.
Therefore,

new
ways
studying
marginalized
identities,

epistemologies
