Understanding
why
people
identify
themselves
as
having
a
mental
disorder
is
crucial
for
making
sense
of
recent
rises
in
self-diagnosis
and
help-seeking.
Previous
studies
have
implicated
factors
such
levels
distress,
health
literacy,
stigma.
Motivated
by
concept
creep
research,
we
tested
whether
also
associated
with
the
expansiveness
people's
concepts
disorder.
A
nationally
representative
sample
474
Americans
completed
measures
impairment,
stigma,
newly
validated
breadth
scales,
addition
to
current
lifetime
(both
self-
professionally-diagnosed)
Structural
equation
modeling
demonstrated
that
participants
broader
were
more
likely
self-diagnose
seek
help,
independent
distress
low
Holding
partially
accounted
higher
among
younger
liberal
predicted
independently
formal
diagnosis.
Implications
surge
concerns
about
pathologization
everyday
life
are
discussed.

Online
self-diagnosis

increasing.
The
reasons
for
increase
include
expansion

e-commerce
in
healthcare,
increased
emphasis
on
patient
involvement

making.

factors

disorders.
A
narrative
was
performed
with
examples
obtained
from
scientific
literature

Some

will

However,
there
are
many
potential
patients
who
self-diagnose,

an
incorrect

dangerous
diagnosis,

Abstract
The
mental
health
of
young
adults
is
well
recognized
as
requiring
serious
attention
in
research
and
consequently
policy.
At
the
same
time,
social
media
has
been
demonstrated
to
create
therapeutic
non-therapeutic
opportunities
for
who
access
them
communication,
wellbeing,
information
seeking,
self-management
reasons.
Social
workers
broadly
need
understand
both
potential
risks
associated
with
use,
these
environments
are
firmly
positioned
within
psychosocial
framework.
Concern
surrounding
vulnerable
populations
accessing
prompts
calls
guidelines
inform
integration
digital
tools

practice.
Hence

guidance
about
how
younger

leverage

Abstract
Background
With
the
growing
role
of
social
media
influencers
(SMIs)
in
providing
health
advice,
concerns
arise
regarding
usefulness
and
reliability
online
information.
This
exploratory
research
focuses
on
expert
content
creators
(HECCs),
who
offer
a
unique
perspective
due
to
their
combined
medical
knowledge
expertise.
Methods
We
conducted
semi-structured
in-depth
qualitative
interviews
with
HECCs
explore
views
SMI-driven
communication,
motivations
for
participating
media,
strategies
they
employ
counteract
misleading
messages
platforms.
The
study
employed
thematic
text
analysis
identify
key
themes
patterns.
Results
highlighted
complex
SMIs
public
health,
acknowledging
potential
promote
positive
behaviors
while
also
noting
risks
associated
spread
inaccurate
or
oversimplified
messages.
findings
emphasize
urgent
need
broaden
communication
address
not
only
misinformation
but
overgeneralized
messaging,
which
can
be
equally
detrimental.
Conclusions
underscore
importance
expanding
both
messaging.
Practical
recommendations
are
provided
mitigate
information
by
SMIs,

Is the Prevalence Inflation Hypothesis Really Two Hypotheses? Disentangling Over-Identification from Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

The
prevalence
inflation
hypothesis
suggests
that
mental
health
awareness
efforts
can
lead
to
an
increase
in
rates
of
illness,
first
because
encourage
individuals

subclinical
levels

problems

illnesses
(“overinterpretation”),
