Over the last decade, United States has seen increasing antidemocratic rhetoric by political leaders. Yet, prior work suggests that such norm-violating does not undermine support for democracy as a system of government. This article presents the state of democracy in world 2022 using most recent Varieties Democracy dataset (V13). There are four main findings. First, level enjoyed by average global citizen is down to 1986-levels and 72% world's population live autocracies. Second, third wave autocratization reaches a new height with 42 countries autocratizing. By contrast, only 14 democratizing. Third, between 1992 2022, autocracies increased their share economy now account for 46% GDP when measured purchasing power parity. Fourth, defying autocratization, eight not stopped but also reversed last 10 years, which we define as democratic U-turns. We find five elements that seem important across identified cases: executive constraints, mass mobilization, alternation power, unified opposition coalescing civil society, international support. analyze different combinations these factors discuss how they could be critical stopping reversing contemporary autocratization. first analysis suggests in-depth, comparative case studies cases counterfactuals would an area future research.

Misinformation poses a significant threat to the integrity of political systems, particularly in competitive authoritarian regimes (CARs), where it can distort public perception and undermine democratic processes. This study focuses on 2023 Turkish general elections—a context characterized by widespread misinformation. While extensive research has been conducted misinformation press freedom digitalization foster mix reliable misleading information, this investigation targets unique challenges media consumption patterns CARs. Utilizing nationally representative survey after elections, we examine association between (traditional online) susceptibility among government opposition voters. Our findings reveal that partisan news significantly influences belief misinformation, with individuals tending believe claims aligning their affiliations while rejecting opposing claims. Abstract Using data from the European Social Survey (ESS), this chapter examines stability and change in Europeans’ views of democracy between 2012 2021. Transnationalization of Opposition Strategy under Competitive Authoritarianism: Evidence from Turkey and Hungary DOI

Abstract Despite a growing body of literature on the advancement autocratic tactics and toolkits in competitive authoritarian regimes (CARs), we lack sufficient knowledge strategies that opposition builds against populist-authoritarian governments. Using two top autocratizing cases – Turkey Hungary this article singles out ‘transnationalization’ as one such novel strategy. ‘Transnationalization’ is defined strategy through which opposition-led subnational executives transform local global boundaries by consciously forming link with liberal-democratic world order to expand their space for manoeuvre.
