This
article
presents
the
state
of
democracy
in
world
2022
using
most
recent
Varieties
Democracy
dataset
(V13).
There
are
four
main
findings.
First,
level
enjoyed
by
average
global
citizen
is
down
to
1986-levels
and
72%
world's
population
live
autocracies.
Second,
third
wave
autocratization
reaches
a
new
height
with
42
countries
autocratizing.
By
contrast,
only
14
democratizing.
Third,
between
1992

autocracies

Misinformation
poses
a
significant
threat

Abstract
Using
data
from
the
European
Social
Survey
(ESS),
this
chapter
examines
stability
and
change
in
Europeans’
views
of
democracy
between
2012
2021.
It
analyzes
importance
citizens
attribute

elements

liberal,

direct,
populist
