Current status and future agenda of citizen journalism research: a computational analysis DOI

Purpose This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current status and future research agenda citizen journalism through computational analysis lens. It explores how technological advancements evolving media consumption patterns have shaped rise journalism, democratizing news production via social digital technologies impacting traditional societal discourse. Design/methodology/approach A bibliometric was conducted on 1,325 peer-reviewed articles related sourced from Dimensions.ai database. The study used Biblioshiny app bibliometrix software VOSviewer for network visualization. examined publication trends, citation patterns, major contributors, influential journals main directions map intellectual landscape research. Findings revealed significant growth in publications starting 2004, with peak years 2021–2023. Key researchers were identified, highlighting both sustained emerging contributions. Co-occurrence keywords indicated focus qualitative methods credibility journalism. International collaboration varied, robust intra-country USA high intercountry rates Austria Australia. TikTok is rapidly establishing itself as an important platform for contemporary digital journalism but explorations on its transnational journalistic usage thus far remain limited in size and scope. Hence, this explorative study adopts a methods approach to collect assess 26,473 videos posted by 91 European news outlets between 2019 2022. Rooted conceptually affordance hybridity theory methodologically methods, the theorizes production trends drawing proposed typology of visual, hashtags, auditory affordances. In this study, a mixed method was used to understand metajournalistic discourse on TikTok. Using convenience sampling, 30 journalists active TikTok were selected and all their available 3270 videos manually content analyzed.
