Understanding and acting upon risk is notably challenging. For instance, loss aversion has traditionally been viewed as merely a cognitive bias, but it can be interpreted an evolutionarily advantageous heuristic for humans to avoid sudden ruin. The challenging nature of rare highly impactful events, such novel pathogens, may lead underestimation potential damages the framing precautions superfluous. This further contribute misaligned perceptions risk.As we operate with risks opportunities among unparalleled complexity, neglecting complex patterns creates false sense safety. Bettinger, J. S., K. Friston. Conceptual Foundations of Physiological Regulation incorporating the Free Energy Principle & Self-Organized Criticality. NEUROSCI BIOBEHAV REV 23(x) 144-XXX, 2022. Since late nineteen-nineties, concept homeostasis has been contextualized within a broader class "allostatic" dynamics characterized by wider-berth causal factors including social, psychological and environmental entailments; fundamental nature integrated brain-body dynamics; plus role anticipatory, top-down constraints supplied intrinsic regulatory models. Many these evidentiary are integral in original descriptions homeostasis; subsequently integrated; and/or cite more-general operating principles self-organization. As result, allostasis may be generalized to larger category variational systems biology, engineering physics terms advances complex systems, statistical mechanics involving heterogenous (hierarchical/heterarchical, modular) like brain-networks internal milieu. This paper offers three-part treatment. 1) interpret "allostasis" emphasize relational foundation physiological stability; 2) adapt as "stability through change" include "return stability" 3) reframe model with conceptual criticality that licenses upgrade dynamics.

Introduction: Exercise benefits individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Rock climbing includes exercise characteristics from clinical guidelines (e.g., aerobic, resistance, balance training, cued-movements, community-based) and offers unique somatosensory visuospatial experiences that may aid motor learning. This study examined climbing’s effects on PD physical function. Methods: quasi-experimental observational pilot used pre-to-post-test comparisons to assess participants mild moderate (Hoehn Yahr 1-3) who walked independently. The intervention included 12 weeks of community-based, twice-weekly top-rope under one-on-one supervision, tailored skill level. Wall angles, hand/foot holds, routes varied became progressively more difficult as skills increased. primary outcome was the Community Balance & Mobility Scale (CBMS); secondary measures Agility T-Test (ATT), 9-Hole Peg Test (9HPT), upper extremity reaction time using BlazePods (UE-React), grip strength. Results: 28 completed study: 8 women/20 men; mean age = 66.1 (sd 7.4) years; average duration 4.0 3.6) years. Paired t-tests comparing pre- post-test scores effect sizes (ES) 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for significant results Hedge’s g. Findings were: CBMS (p < 0.001; ES 0.573, CI 0.178-0.960), ATT 0.462, 0.078-0.838), 9HPT 0.480, 0.094-0.858), UE-React <0.001; 0.329, −0.045-0.696); GS changes non-significant.Conclusions: demonstrated medium-size mobility/balance small-size agility dexterity could impact functioning in everyday activities.

Abrupt shifts between alternative regimes occur in complex systems, from cell regulation to brain functions ecosystems. Several model-free early warning signals (EWS) have been proposed detect impending transitions, but failure or poor performance some systems called for better investigation of their generic applicability. Notably, there are still ongoing debates whether such can be successfully extracted data particular biological experiments. In this work, we systematically investigate properties and dynamical EWS different deteriorating conditions, propose an optimized combination trigger warnings as possible, eventually verified on experimental microbiological populations. Our results explain discrepancies observed the literature signs simulated models real data, provide guidance selection based desired suggest composite indicator alert critical transitions using distribution data.

Hysteresis has been used to understand various social phenomena, such as political polarization, the persistence of vaccination-compliance problem, or delayed response employees in a firm wage incentives. The aim this article is show insights that can be gained from using agent-based models (ABMs) study hysteresis. To build up an intuition about hysteresis, we start with illustrative example physics demonstrates how hysteresis manifests collective memory. Next, present examples psychology and systems. We then two simple ABMs binary decisions—the Ising model q-voter model—to explain observed ABMs. Specifically, result influence external factors systems, organizational polices, governmental laws, mass media campaigns, well internal noise associated random changes agent decisions. Finally, clarify relationship between several closely related concepts order–disorder transitions bifurcation, conclude discussion advantages
