Low-Density Polyethylene Microplastics in the Rumen: Implications for Rumen Fermentation Dynamics and Utilization of Concentrate Feed

Microplastics
(MPs)
have
emerged
as
a
significant
environmental
threat,
infiltrating
livestock
systems.
This
study
presents
the
first
in
vitro
investigation
of
effects
low-density
polyethylene
(LDPE)
MP
contamination
on
rumen
fermentation
dynamics
and
feed
utilization
simulated
ruminal
digestive
system.
Concentrate
was
incubated
buffered
fluid
collected
from
lambs,
supplemented
with
LDPE
MPs
at
concentrations
3.3
g/L
6.6
compared
to
concentrate
without
contamination.
The
results
demonstrate
that
both
levels
significantly
altered
by
reducing
asymptotic
gas
production
11%

increasing
constant
rate

levels,
respectively,

unaffected.
