The impact of trauma and how to intervene: a narrative review of psychotraumatology over the past 15 years

To
mark
15
years
of
the
European
Journal
Psychotraumatology,
editors
reviewed
past
15-year
research
on
trauma
exposure
and
its
consequences,
as
well
developments
in
(early)
psychological,
pharmacological
complementary
interventions.
In
all
sections
this
paper,
we
provide
perspectives
sex/gender
aspects,
life
course
trends,
cross-cultural/global
systemic
societal
contexts.
Globally,
majority
people
experience
stressful
events
that
may
be
characterized
traumatic.
However,
definitions
what
is
traumatic
are
not
necessarily
straightforward
or
universal.
Traumatic
have
a
wide
range
transdiagnostic
mental
physical
health
limited
to
posttraumatic
stress
disorder
(PTSD).
Research
genetic,
molecular,
neurobiological
influences
show
promise
for
further
understanding
underlying
risk
resilience
trauma-related
consequences.
Symptom
presentation,
prevalence,
course,
response
experiences,
differ
depending
individuals'
age
developmental
phase,
sex/gender,
sociocultural
environmental
contexts,
socio-political
forces.
Early
interventions
potential
prevent
acute
reactions
from
escalating
PTSD
diagnosis
whether
delivered

weeks
after
trauma.

Using genomic structural equation modeling to examine the genetic architecture of PTSD and life satisfaction phenotypes

Objective:
Posttraumatic
stress
disorder
(PTSD)
and
life
satisfaction
phenotypes
are
inversely
related
on
a
phenotypic
level.
Given
these
established
relations,
researchers
have
begun
to
examine
possible
shared
genetic
contributions
outcomes,
though
the
existing
literature
is
sparse
examines
relations
via
univariate
methods.
We
sought
architecture
of
PTSD
six
well-being
(i.e.
subjective
well-being,
friend
satisfaction,
family
work
financial
satisfaction)
using
multivariate
approach.Method:
used
Genomic
Structural
Equation
Modeling
(gSEM)
analyze
summary-level
data
from
large-scale
GWAS
European
Ancestry.Results:
Findings
show
that
two,
correlated
factors
model
fit
best,
in
which
load
separate
but
factors.Conclusions:
suggest
that,
methods,
latent
factor
capturing
many
different
positive
genetically
PTSD.

Abstract
The
biological
mechanisms
underlying
resilience
have
been
extensively
studied,
yet
our
understanding
of
the
genetic
architecture
in
humans
remains
limited.
While
earlier
studies
investigated
effects
specific
candidate
genes,
small
sample
sizes
and
narrow
focus
on
one
target
gene
provided
a
limited
perspective
architecture.
Genome-wide
association
(GWAS)
can
overcome
these
issues
but
rarely
applied
to
resilience.
To
date,
only
two
GWAS
are
reported,
because
few
sufficiently
large-scale
datasets
measure
resilience,
those
that
do
may
not
data.
Here
we
used
novel
longitudinal
phenotype
with
genomic
data
from
Avon
Longitudinal
Study
Parent
Children
(ALSPAC)
establish
trajectories
response
adverse
childhood
experiences
(ACEs).
Our
results
identify
SMARCA2
OPRM1
genes
as
significant
markers,
highlighting
their
roles
epigenetic
dendritic
functions
associated
Post-GWAS
analyses
revealed
enrichment
linked
axonal
functions,
supporting
hypothesis

plasticity
