The exchange of food commodities significantly contributes to alleviating the strain on land used for agricultural production by linking areas rich in with those facing resource limitations. This study employs entropy weight–TOPSIS method measure water–land–food system, utilizes a two-way fixed-effects model examine impact import competition coordination and applies spatial Durbin explore spillover effects this impact. findings indicate following: (1) average level WLF system China stands at 0.317, showing considerable variability. all regions initially decreased then increased period studied, northeast region exhibiting highest coordination. (2) competitive effect domestic foreign costs driven imports has positive system. For every 100,000 hectares saved through effect, China’s increases 0.002. However, once exceeds 1.5 million hectares, importing country’s market becomes excessive starts have negative effect. (3) Split-sample regression revealed that is stronger southern compared northern region. Additionally, increase more pronounced major than non-major areas. (4) Based results econometric model, not only within but also positively impacts neighboring regions. (5) use efficiency acts as conduit
