Abstract Mounting evidence highlights the high prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among correctional workers. The current analysis draws on survey response data to present a social profile workers in province Manitoba ( n = 580), Canada, who screened positive for PTSD 196). The correctional training program (CTP), composed of three stages, includes a 14 week in-person component that Correctional Officer Recruits (CORs) must complete prior to their employment as federal (CO) for Service Canada (CSC). CTP prepares recruits plethora CO responsibilities, some dependent on physical fitness, such responding codes being called, altercations, or violent situations. Unlike other public safety positions (e.g. policing, border services, coast guard) CSC does not require occupational fitness testing. In the current article, we use data from multiyear longitudinal study COs across unpack how CORs manage expectations at CTP; CSCs' COR fitness; and outline what types weightlifting, cardiovascular, self-defence) are taught, thus valued most, during CTP. We situate voices regarding within broader "body" literature discuss policy recommendations tied specifically COs' interest in reinstating pre-employment screening.

Previous research assessing correctional worker (CW) mental health has seldom assessed for differences based on jurisdiction or diverse occupational categories. The current study was designed to provide a nuanced quantitative examination of disorder prevalence and related problems among CWs qualitatively explore the varying social contexts surrounding CW well-being. We reflect how we overcame unanticipated challenges disruptions (e.g., technology, COVID-19 pandemic) throughout design, launch, analysis survey, illustrate our national study, driven by rigorous methodological approach collaborative builds extant wellness literature.

In this study, we critically examine how provincial correctional officers in Atlantic Canada interpret and disseminate knowledge around direct supervision the context of a new institution under construction to replace Her [His] Majesty’s Penitentiary—Canada’s oldest prison. Direct is model intended facilitate positive, pro-social relationships between staff incarcerated people, build therapeutic alliances. Drawing on data from semi-structured interviews, study analyzes perspectives 28 who generally expressed concerns about and, turn, proposed recommendations for facility. We frame these interpretations through lens epistemic culture, identifying prisons can shape production indirect supervision. doing so, highlight benefits limitations models, exploring prison culture informs ways understand, interpret, ultimately resist conclude successful implementation requires deeper understanding apprehensions by officers, comprehensive training regimens, structural supports such as adequate staffing mental health services.
