Abstract Leaf herbivory in Miconia albicans (Melastomataceae): an evaluation of leaf position and age – Abstract: Herbivory represents a critical interaction between insects plants, involving physical defenses like trichomes that enhance plant resistance to herbivorous attacks, while galls—plant tumors— can drain nutrients from healthy tissues. This study aimed assess foliar rates analyze gall incidence cerrado stricto sensu area near Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. From December 2013 March 2014, were documented biweekly using digital camera, with subsequent analysis performed ImageJ software. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used determine significant differences young old leaves, GLMM beta error distribution followed by Wald chi-square examined variations high low leaves. Fifteen plants selected, marking one leaf, alongside leaf. The galls assessed across 50 randomly chosen the average number per quantified another 20 plants. difference galled non-galled branches analyzed Mann-Whitney test. Findings indicated no leaves; however, higher leaves exhibited reduced compared those lower strata, suggesting significantly influences herbivory. Galls averaged 19 ± 9 predominantly on older shaded microclimates strata likely contribute increased insect abundance, underscoring impact rates.

AbstractA central challenge in community ecology is understanding and predicting the effects of abiotic factors on assembly. In particular, microbial communities play a role ecosystem, but we do not understand how changing like temperature are going to affect composition or function. this article, studied self-assembly multiple synthetic environments changes based metabolic responses different functional groups along gradient. many communities, coexist through partitioning carbon sources an emergent trophic structure (cross-feeding). system, respirofermentative bacteria display preference for sugars supplied as only source secrete secondary (organic acids) that more efficiently consumed by obligate respirators. As consequence structure, plasticity respirofermenters has downstream consequences relative abundance respirators across temperatures. We found temperatures can largely be described increase fermentation by-products with increasing from bacteria. This research highlights importance trade-offs species interactions dynamics gradients.

AbstractScience is as dynamic the world around us. Our ideas continually change, do approaches we use to study science. Few things remain invariant in this changing landscape, but a fascination with pattern and process one that has endured throughout history of Paying homage long-held tradition, 2023 Vice Presidential Symposium American Society Naturalists focused on role ecology evolution. It brought together group early-career researchers working topics ranging from genetic diversity microbes patterns species interactions geological record. Their work spanned taxonomic spectrum mammals, temporal dimension Cenozoic present, manipulative experiments comparative approaches. In introductory article, I discuss how these diverse are linked by common thread elucidating processes underlying they collectively generate novel insights into maintenance at different levels organization.
