Using surface observation data for the past hundred years, contributions of year-specific climate anomaly, nationwide warming, and urban warming to hot summers in Japan were evaluated. A number indices temperature defined indicate severity summer heat each year. Then, year-to-year time series index was divided into a component temporally smoothed component, latter non-urban an component. The results show that began increase after 1990s, which is approximately attributable global although there are some variations on yearly multidecadal scales related Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) Southern (SO), whereas became apparent since 1960s at stations highly urbanized areas. For recent record-breaking heat, all evaluated be order 1 °C.
