Association of Cannabis Use Disorder with Major Adverse Cardiac and Cerebrovascular Events in Older Non-Tobacco Users: A Population-Based Analysis

Background:
Tobacco
use
disorder
(TUD)
adversely
impacts
older
patients
with
established
cardiovascular
disease
(CVD)
risk.
However,
CVD
risk
in
chronic
habitual
cannabis
users
without
the
confounding
impact
of
TUD
hasn’t
been
explored.
We
aimed
to
determine
major
adverse
cardiac
and
cerebrovascular
events
(MACCE)
non-tobacco
smokers
vs.
(CUD).
Methods:
queried
2019
National
Inpatient
Sample
for
hospitalized
traditional
factors
aged
≥65
years.
Relevant
ICD-10
codes
were
used
identify
CUD.
Using
multivariable
logistic
regression,
we
evaluated
odds
MACCE
CUD
cohorts
compared
non-CUD
cohorts.
Results:
Prevalence
sample
was
0.3%
(28,535/10,708,815,
median
age
69),
predominantly
male,
black,
non-electively
admitted
from
urban
teaching
hospitals.
Of
CUD,
13.9%
reported
MACCE.
The
cohort
higher
(OR
1.20,
95%
CI
1.11–1.29,
p
<
0.001)
cohort.
Comorbidities
such
as
hypertension

predicted

Abstract
Introduction
Alcohol
and
substance
use
are
increasing
in
older
adults,
many
of
whom
have
depression,
treatment
this
context
may
be
more
hazardous.
We
assessed
alcohol
other
patterns
adults
with
treatment‐resistant
depression
(TRD).
examined
patient
characteristics
associated
higher
consumption
the
moderating
effect
on

between
clinical
variables

during
antidepressant
treatment.
Methods

exploratory
analysis

ABSTRACT
With
increased
legalization
of
recreational
and
medical
cannabis,
use
this
drug
is
growing
rapidly
among
older
adults.
As
cannabis
can
impair
cognition
in
young
adults,
it
critically
important
to
understand
how
consumption
interacts
with
the
cognitive
profile
aged
individuals,
who
are
already
at
risk
decline.
The
current
study
was
designed
determine
influences
multiple
forms
adult
rats
both
sexes
when
delivered
via
two
translationally-relevant
routes
administration.
Acute
exposure
smoke
enhanced
prefrontal
cortex-dependent
working
memory
accuracy
males,
but
impaired
females,
while
having
no
effects
adults
either
sex.
In
contrast,
same
regimen
had
minimal
on
a
hippocampus-dependent
trial-unique
non-matching
location
mnemonic
task,
irrespective
age
or
second
set
experiments,
chronic
oral
Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol
(Δ9THC)
sexes,
Δ9THC
did
not
affect
spatial
learning
group.
Minimal
differences
were
observed
pharmacokinetics
route
Together,
these
results
show
that
attenuate
impairments
emerge
aging.
While
enhancing

cognition,

Background:
Medical
cannabis
(MC)
use
is
increasing
across
the
USA,
with
functional
MC
programs
now
operating
in
38
states.
While
program
policies
and
practices
vary
widely,
little
known
about
whether
how
states
evaluate
their
programs.
Better
characterization
of
state
evaluation
to
date
could
inform
states,
officials,
providers
best
provide
a
roadmap
for
future
evaluation.
Summary:
We
conducted
narrative
review
evaluations,
including
peer-reviewed
literature
reports
produced
by
independent
state-based
non-state-based
evaluators.
Among
304
abstracts
initially
screened,
seven
evaluations
met
inclusion
criteria.
Within
these
we
report
results
according
three
overarching
themes:
(1)
characteristics,
comparison
evaluations;
(2)
experience,
perceptions
patients;
(3)
assessment
use,
self-reported
efficacy
qualifying
medical
conditions,
patterns
nonmedical
risk
factors
relevant
use.
Additionally,
found
that
while
goals
methods
varied
relied
on
independent,
non-state
entities
tended
have
more
comprehensive
quantitatively
rigorous
results.
